For the 10th time, a global climate strike by the For Future movement took place
in numerous countries at the same time. This has long outgrown a few committedstudents and has become a multi-age, international campaign for global climatejustice. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic temporarily slowed down the momentum ofthe mobilizations, but still thousands of people came together for a rally anddemonstration in Cologne-Deutz on this sunny spring day. Hundreds of protestersalso took part in the bike tour through the neighboring districts that startedthere. ---- These gatherings are no longer about making hopeful environmentalappeals to the ruling parties. Instead, numerous other topics have been discussedin recent years: for example, the anti-racist and anti-colonial perspective onindustrial climate change. And its catastrophic consequences for people andnature, especially in the Global South and especially for the female* ruralpopulation. Therefore, the demands for financial compensation and reparations forcenturies of exploitation and destruction by the capitalist metropolis aregetting louder. But the social aspects of price increases for fossil fuels here in Western Europeare also discussed again and again. Not only because of expensive petrol anddiesel, but also because of rising heating costs and higher rents (due to"energetic renovation"). In addition, the immediate closure of all nuclear andcoal-fired power plants, as well as the sustainable turnaround in transport, require a fundamental economic rethink. So that no jobs are lost in thesesectors, but instead are converted to renewable energies and socialresponsibility as far as possible. In addition, at the day of action on 25.03. also the Russian Federation's war ofaggression against the Republic of Ukraine, which has been raging for a month. Not least because many European countries have made themselves dependent onsupplies of natural gas and oil from Russia, whose authoritarian regime they nowwant to boycott. But instead of investing massively in alternative wind and solarenergy, the federal government is trying to conclude replacement contracts withthe reactionary Gulf monarchies and at the same time is investing many billionsof euros in the military industry. An immediate phase-out of fossil fuels would be just as necessary as the end ofnuclear power in all countries. Because this represents a constant threat to thepopulation, just as it is a compelling basis for the military armament of nuclearwarfare. In addition, the conquest campaign of the oil and gas exporter Russia onthe one hand and the aggressive arms policy of the NATO countries on the otherhand are closely linked to intensifying imperial competition for power overfossil fuel sources and global transport routes. For these reasons, there is an urgent need not only to fight against the dramaticglobal warming and species extinction that the destructive mismanagement ofcapitalist exploitation has caused. But also to act together against militaryconflicts and catastrophic destruction that threaten our lives worldwide, withstrikes, boycotts, occupations, blockades and other direct forms of action inself-determined solidarity.
