More than 800 people mobilized on May 14 in Pertuis in the Vaucluse against a
project to extend an economic activity zone threatening 86 hectares of fertileland. Activists have been fighting for more than three years against this projectand alert residents to the excesses of local politics. ---- We are in 2022 AD,the whole Earth is attacked by concrete. All ? Nope ! A village populated bydiehard Zapatatistas resists the invader again and again. This village is that ofPertuis, in the heart of Provence, whose mayor, Roger Pellenc, has still notunderstood that money and concrete cannot be eaten. But nearly 30 associationsand collectives are there to remind him by fighting for almost three yearsagainst a project to extend an economic activity zone threatening 86 hectares ofland. An aberration for many reasons: these places are inhabited, cultivated orfallow, in a humid and flood-prone area on the banks of the Durance, whoseregular floods have shaped a particularly fertile soil. We must also mention thegreat wealth of biodiversity present on the site: of the 1,047 species listed inthe municipality of Pertuis,So what are the potatoes doing in there ? It's simple: potato cultivation istraditional in the region, and during the first big mobilization, in April 2021,more than 600 people went there for a massive planting on the threatened land.Then, from November 2021, some houses (empty following the expropriations) wereoccupied by activists: this is how the Zap, the potato zone[1]was born .A mayor with dubious methodsRoger Pellenc, sulphurous character between mayor, businessman and feudal lord?This long-toothed septuagenarian is the founder of an agricultural equipment andmachinery company that generates several hundred million euros in profits. Butgreedy and ruthless, Roger has his eye on these hectares to expand his empire.And when Roger wants his dough, he is ready to do anything: destroy withoutauthorization the neighboring houses of the Zap (containing asbestos), tear downthe gate and surrounding walls of the Zap with a bulldozer... Illegally andescorted by its municipal police !However, the Zapatatistas (being expelled since the end of the winter break) donot let go: May 14 and 15 were a great weekend of mobilization around ahullabaloo in collaboration with the Confédération paysanne de Paca and Uprisingsof the earth. Costumes, marching bands, plantations, farmer's market and crafts:more than 800 people marched against the concreting, and more than 1,500 over theentire weekend. This great outpouring of protest, mixing joy and anger, alsogenerated a few acts of vandalism against agricultural equipment from one ofPellenc's showcase companies, risking weakening one of the last Zads in France,and its supporters.
