After a barrage of criticism due to the toxic emissions of arsenic and other
heavy metals and fine particles, as well as the turpitudes of the state'sunscrupulous collaboration with the multinational owner, Glencore, the Abitibiregional elites, in concert with the unions, turn a blind eye and are now tryingto defend the polluting permit granted to the smelter: they want us to believethat Glencore has heard the message and that it will fix everything. It is intruth an unambitious emissions reduction plan that the Foundry has presented andthe investments will be partly paid for by the State thanks to the complicity ofour governments. We're the stuffing turkeys! The standards of the Ministry of theEnvironment will not be reached, as well as the proposals formulated by theNational Institute of Public Health of Quebec or the health standards of theWorld Health Organization. Rouyn-Noranda will remain one of the world's garbagecans where copper is recovered from highly contaminated hazardous materials. WhenLegault tells us that the population will now have to accept living with "minimalrisk", it means living with more cancers, diseases linked to contaminants anddevastated ecosystems than elsewhere. The game is already well put together evenif the elites claim that they are "consulting the population". The CSNAbitibi-Témiscamingue-Nord-du-Québec and the Noranda Mine Workers' Union, throughtheir president, have already hastened to declare themselves reassured by themine's efforts, together with the employer associations that are theRouyn-Noranda Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Quebec Mining Association.Consultations are a bogus process where polluters and their collaborators holdpower beyond measure compared to the simple inhabitants who will suffer theconsequences. Soon, the government will tell us that the cancers of Rouyn-Norandaand the contamination of children and adults in the Notre-Dame district aresocially acceptable!It should be noted that a citizens' committee, the Rouyn-Noranda Toxic Waste andEmissions Stop Committee, continues to fight against this environmental andhealth crime that the State would have liked to keep as a well-kept secret. Forseveral years, they and they have participated in revealing many shenanigans ofgovernment institutions and Glencore. When Economy and Innovation Minister PierreFitzgibbon arrogantly declares that "no one is going to die" about the pollutionpermits granted to other companies in the province, it is certainly notreassuring words.
