The repression continues against our comrade Éric, who went on a hunger strike to
obtain the regularization of a young Malian, Adama. ---- On Tuesday, June 7, 2022at 1:45 p.m., our comrade Éric was to appear before the criminal court ofClermont-Ferrand, in order to be tried there for an offense of contempt of arepresentative of the public authority. He is accused of comments made under theinfluence of emotion, at a time when he was recovering with difficulty from threeweeks of hunger strike. ---- The facts date back to March 9, 2021, at the heartof a major mobilization in favor of Madama, a young Malian who has been welcomedfor almost two years by Eric and his partner. Madama, to whom the prefect ofHaute-Loire had refused a residence permit for months. The young Malian, summonedby the Border Police (PAF) of Gerzat to give details of his identity papers,suddenly finds himself trapped, immediately placed in police custody,interrogated for hours, and finally, interned in an administrative detentioncenter (CRA). After a whole day of waiting in front of the police station, afterhaving also undergone hours of interrogation, the two parents at heart had tobrutally accept the decision of the prefect to issue him an OQTF (obligation toleave French territory) and to expel him without delay to Mali.This indictment reflects judicial harassment against our two comrades, and adesire to scare the supportive families who open their doors to welcoming youngpeople fleeing poverty, insecurity and war. A relentlessness which also resultedin a preliminary investigation carried out by the PAF against the couple on asupposed case of false papers in connection with the two young people they hadwelcomed into their home; in all legality, since the two young Malians had beenentrusted to them by a juvenile judge so that they could watch over them untilthey reached majority as trustworthy third parties. Thus, in September 2021 Ericand Véronique had both been summoned by the PAF, placed in police custody,questioned and searched at their home with seizure of computer equipment and cellphone. A baseless case, which has recently been dismissed!For more than a year now, these two activists have been subjected to repressionby the authorities, to punish what looks very much like a "crime of solidarity",which explains the mobilization before the court following a local appealbringing together more from 40 trade unions, associations and politiciansreflecting a very wide range of Secours Catholique and Emmaüs, to UCL and thelocal FA group, clearly showing the general indignation at this relentlessness.The prosecutor proposed as a penalty 90 days/fine at 10 euros per day (that is tosay that each unpaid day turns into a day in prison, a fine example of classjustice), 500 euros in damages to the policeman and above all registration inlocker B2. It was the latter that posed a problem since Éric, a teacher, could bethreatened with the future of his work. In the end, the judge found the guiltaccompanied by a fine of 600 euros without day/fine, 500 euros for the policeofficer and above all, it was essentially an exemption from registration on theB2. If it is a relief, it is by no means a victory since the relentlessnesscontinues with the prefecture which is now attacking the second young person whomthey had welcomed.
