A Foodpanda driver died in a crash on the streets of Hong Kong on July 26. Some
colleagues and relatives have written a joint open letter in which they call forthe improvement of occupational safety. ---- Many unions in the#DeliveryHeroRidersUnited network have already declared their support for thisinitiative. The International Committee of FAU also signed the open letter. TheRiders' Rights Concern Group (Hong Kong) is calling on unions worldwide to signby August 16th. ---- To: foodpanda Hong Kong (Delivery Hero Hong Kong Limited)---- Heartbroken to see that our colleague died in the accident on July 26th.Since some of us work in the same zone, we know that the brother was very niceand hardworking. He rushed to work earlier every day due to foodpanda's recentpay cuts as well as a growing number of speeding tickets issued during deliveries. So we share the sorrow with his family and hope his family can get through thedifficult time. What makes us even more painful is knowing clearly that the samething can happen to any of us.We strive to walk under the sun and in the rain just to make ends meet. But ifsomething happens, insurance with such a low level of benefits will not be ableto support us and our family. Or maybe we're not even insured if it's not duringa delivery. Or foodpanda doesn't tell our families what's happening until half aday later. So what has foodpanda done to protect us in our work? What do we get if we riskour lives every day?And it's not just about insurance. We rush to the streets faster becausefoodpanda is cutting our wages and urging us to fill more orders. We work longerbecause foodpanda is recruiting more and more drivers, which means that each ofus gets fewer jobs. Also, foodpanda does not help us with parking and expenses. All this contributes to the risks in occupational safety. It's all connected. Therefore we require that foodpanda:1. to account for the accident to the family of the victim, all foodpandacouriers and the public,2. Increasing the level of benefits and extending the insurance coverage3. Review of all factors that can lead to risk in work safety, including payment, control, app, etc.,4. meet with couriers on safety, injury and insurance issues,5. Communicating with government agencies about parking and covering some parkingexpenses.A group of food panda riders from Hong Kong (July 28, 2022)List of supporters & source: https://globalmayday.net/deliveryheroridersunited/https://www.fau.org/artikel/open-letter-following-deadly-accident-in-hong-kong_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.ca
