tighter around us and the authoritarian gloom deepens and spreads. Cops are
camped on our premises, cages are parked inside the asylum that was conquered
with blood and struggles. While the seas are flooded with tourists, cities and
squares are flooded with uniformed bastards, the natural world is destroyed in
the name of development, public spaces are flattened. A few weeks ago we risked
counting the first dead incarcerated hunger striker with comrade G. Michaelidis
counting 67 days of hunger strike and struggle for life and dignity against his
vindictive detention by the state. Also, yesterday, August 10, the appeals court
held a hearing on whether or not to continue the pre-trial detention of Panos
Kalaitzis, who has been held for approximately six months based solely on his
social relations. A few days ago, the first turnstiles were placed in the
rector's office of AUTH, while in the last 24 hours the mats were camped in a new
spot within the campus. At the same time, in the last days in Exarchia, the
state, municipality, police and investors started to destroy the only square in
the area, erecting sheet metal and beating the residents who react.

So all of the above are manifestations of capitalist integration today, attempts
at neoliberalization and expansion of barbarism in every aspect of social
reality. Moreover, it is a constant tactic of the state apparatus to use the days
of August to implement its most anti-social views, since at the same time the
majority of the social base is working in the largest galley of the Greek economy
with inhumane and intensive working conditions.

In this way, the square of Exarchia is closed with sheet metal and police forces
have been camped there since Tuesday 9/8, despite the resistance and the opposite
position of the residents of the neighborhood of Exarchia. The construction of
the Metro station itself serves a dual role. On the one hand, it expands the
profits of big business as it contributes to the gentrification of the
neighborhood and its transformation into an alternative entertainment venue. Also
on the other hand, it is another step towards the silencing of the cinematic
history of the neighborhood of Exarchia and the encroachment, both spatially and
politically, of a space of gestation of cinematic and rebellious processes over
the years. So we are talking about the attempt to museumize one of our most
important spaces, a space from below.

Indeed, we are in difficult times, kinetic retreat and defeat in several
important battles. It is now clear that it is an immediate pre-election need of
the New Democracy to shift the current affairs from: the massive destruction of
forests due to the lack of planning and human resources, the for some scandal of
surveillance of political leaders (really for us the surveillance and mainly not
of political leaders but of world of the struggle is a given) and many other
failures, in the application and intensity of repressive measures with the guise
of progress. Therefore, there is an immediate need to rebuild the competitive
movement, to organize in all social fields: workplaces, schools, colleges. It is
also necessary to create political initiatives and strengthen existing
structures, with the aim of coordinated action and the creation of answers at a
central political level. Organization and struggle for the defense of public
space, asylum, public education, the acquired struggles.
