Dear,
Qatar's LGBT+ community faces legitimate persecution: they need your protection now! With being gay punishable with three to five years imprisonment – even the death penalty – it's no wonder many LGBT+ Qataris are forced to flee their home in search of a safer one.
Unfortunately, U.S. asylum policies don't make this easy.
Current U.S. asylum legislation does not explicitly include protections on the grounds of gender expression and sex characteristics.
Many asylum applicants are denied after being unable to name popular gay bars or organizations in their home countries. Questions which can be impossible to answer when you've been forced to live in the shadows.
For too long, countries like the U.S. have sat on the sidelines as LGBT+ asylum seekers face uncertain futures. This must change.
