 November 4th is National Unity and Armed Forces Day. Established in 1919, just

one year after the end of the First World War, this date celebrates the
anniversary of the armistice of Villa Giusti, which sanctioned the surrender of
the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Italy. ---- The exaltation of the victory of the
First World War, the first true generalized imperialist conflict, responds to a
nationalist and chauvinist rhetoric, which wants to read Italy's intervention in
the conflict as the completion of the Risorgimento process. In reality, the Great
War was the culmination of the inter-imperialist tensions that had crossed all of
Europe for decades; the involvement of our country, masked by the desire to free
territories with an Italian majority, responded to the desire of Italian
capitalism to participate in the division of the imperialist booty, acquiring new
territories, trade routes, communication routes, outlets to the sea. Millions of
workers were sent to slaughter in the trenches to fight a war from which they had
nothing to gain.
The economic interests that animated that conflict were the same that favored the
outbreak of the Second World War, and making a pindaric flight to the present
day, are the same ones that trigger proxy wars in this phase. Capitalism has now
reached its phase of maximum development, states are competing for the division
of the globe into spheres of influence, even at the cost of resorting to armed
conflicts. The ideological artifices used in the past to legitimize war are still
re-proposed today with the most varied pretexts: from the fight against
terrorism, to the distinction between the aggressor and the attacked country, to
"denazification". All elements designed specifically to camouflage the real
causes that push the capitalist states to make war with each other and appeal to
"National Unity" against the external enemy.
The Italian military intervention in Ukraine is consequent to the interests of
our national bourgeoisie, perfectly aligned with the imperialist plans of the US
and NATO which operate in contending with Russia for hegemony in Eastern Europe.
Every day in the places of knowledge we are bombarded by ideological operations
aimed at creating consensus around the involvement of our country in war. The
student movement has historically married anti-militarist and anti-imperialist
battles. Students of every generation have been protagonists of the mass
mobilizations against the war. It is our historical task to intervene even now,
in a phase in which the risk of a generalization of the conflict is very real. We
must guard the places of knowledge so that they are not infected by war
propaganda, or even involved in preparing for war, as is the case for many
universities in our country. There are dozens of universities that annually enter
into agreements with the military industry and with the military apparatuses of
the states. There are hundreds of projects involving students from schools and
military corps, as in the case of the convention signed last year by the Sicilian
USR with the Italian army to have PCTOs carried out in three large Sicilian barracks.
On 4 November, as happens every year, initiatives will be organized in schools
and universities aimed at enhancing Italy's victory in the First World War. We
must take action to firmly counter the nationalist and interventionist rhetoric
that will emerge on that day. We organize agitation actions, assemblies,
demonstrations to make our voices heard.
