Translation of the article by our companions from the WAS-section of the AIT in
Austria, about a fight against the boss of the "French-style" bakery Le Firin, who refuses to pay his ex-employees. (for background, see the article "Viennesecafés and pickets: the WAS in action"). ---- Our companions from the WAS (WienerArbeiterInnen-Syndikat, Workers' Union of Vienna), section of the AIT(International Workers' Association) in Austria, are involved in a series ofconflicts in the cafes and bakeries of the Austrian capital. The problems facedby workers there are the same as those in the same sectors are faced here. Theirstruggle is therefore an inspiration for our future struggles. Our companions from the WAS (Wiener ArbeiterInnen-Syndikat, Workers' Union ofVienna), section of the AIT (International Workers' Association) in Austria, areinvolved in a series of conflicts in the cafes and bakeries of the Austriancapital. The problems faced by workers there are the same as those in the samesectors are faced here. Their struggle is therefore an inspiration for our futurestruggles. At the moment we have six labor disputes going on at the Vienna Workers' Union. One of them concerns two former employees of the bakery chain "Le Firin" inVienna, which belongs to the CSC group. Two workers from this bakery, which isalso very profitable, ended up resigning following non-existent or insufficientpayment of their overtime, paid leave, on-call payments, COVID bonuses, wages forthe month of March, etc. They turned to WAS-AIT for help in their struggleagainst aggressive bosses. After unsuccessful attempts at amicable conciliationwith the boss so that he paid his ex-employees their due, the companions moved onto the active and public phase by regularly organizing pickets in front of thegroup's bakeries and calling for their boycott."We distributed our leaflets to passers-by and customers as well as bakeryemployees. While some workers seemed very intimidated and did not even dare totake the information we had prepared for them in German and Turkish (many of theworkers are of Turkish origin), other colleagues were very motivated and tried toget in touch with the union. We now know that the other employees are notreceiving their salaries either... Fifteen days after these first gatherings, thesituation has not changed. The bakery has still not paid the salaries and theoutstanding compensation. The companions then decided to organize a more massivegathering on May 29, 2022."On the appointed day, more than 100 companions and friends gathered Sunday noonin front of the bakery "Le Firin" during rush hour. Our two companions who are inthe fight against their ex-boss have experienced what it means to no longer bealone and to fight together against the structures of exploitation. The awarenessthat we are not facing an evil boss in isolation, but a system whose name iscapitalism and which inevitably leads to exploitation, is maturing in many peopleand has just taken to the streets three-digit number in class solidarity with us.The fight against the "Firin" boss is just one of many, in which many affectedworkers now want to fight against the structural disregard for many labor rights. Also the importance of such demonstrations should not be underestimated, especially since women and migrants are even more affected by economic constraints."In the meantime, in addition to our two companions, we have contacts with fiveother former "Firin" workers who have had similar experiences and have alreadywon cases before the Labor Court. The thing is gaining momentum and has become anunfailing success - because we didn't really expect to experience the biggest WASgathering since our inception. It shows, however, that the question posed to the"Firin" really affects many people directly. It was particularly nice to see thatmany workers with a migrant background took part. The songs were partly inGerman, Turkish and English. And the solidarity poster of our brotheranarcosyndicat in France, the CNT-AIT, which had spontaneously sent a message ofsolidarity, was also there.Incidentally, the manager and the owner were also present and had to listen toour slogans for two and a half hours. They were able to enjoy our leaflet "DieArbeiter von Wien" in Turkish and see live how many customers, after receivinginformation from us, turned around and[declared that they]will not shop again at"Firin" for the moment. Our 300 leaflets intended for passers-by were even toofew and disappeared before the end of the rally. For the next actions, we willprint many more! After the rally, we did an impromptu debriefing and a close "networking" meeting. Many new contacts were made and we were able to show several people howanachosyndicalist unions work and where the power of self-organization lies inrelation to representative institutions. We also explained that we as WAS willcontinue the conflict until our mates get all their money, and that obviouslyimpressed some people, especially since there are no paid functions in theanarcho-syndicalist unions and that everything is done on a voluntary basis. The bosses of the "Firin" will certainly need a few days before starting to makecommercial calculations and to wonder if the new loss of image is proportional tothe approximately 3,000 euros of difference that we had during the negotiationson Thursday . Sooner or later, all capitalists realize that it is better to givethe minimum rights of bourgeois labor - some after a week, others with whom wehave dealt, took a year and a half to account for it, but then they still paid, ...Yasasin sendikal mücadelemiz! Long live our union struggle!WSA-AIT, Vienna, May 29, 2022»http://cntaittoulouse.lautre.net/spip.php?article1261_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.caSPREAD THE INFORMATION
