Frieden Trier, invites Dr. Michael Wilk to read from his book "ExperienceRojava". ---- Michael Wilk has been working as an emergency doctor in cooperationwith the Kurdish Red Crescent in the self-governing region of Rojava (northeastSyria) since 2014 to provide medical support and training for the people of theregion. ---- In Rojava, utopian theory becomes practice: according to theprinciples of Abdullah Öcalan's democratic confederalism, internationalists are...building side by side with Kurdish freedom fighters and other locals anegalitarian and sustainable alternative to living together and doing businessthat is critical of patriarchy. First steps are taken here to reflect on andovercome the structural and sometimes life-threatening oppression of women,queers, religious and ethnic minorities.And even if many more steps still have to be taken, the autonomous region withits progressive approach has been a thorn in the side of reactionary and fascistforces such as the Syrian Assad regime, the so-called Islamic State and theTurkish dictator Erdogan from the start. Rojava is constantly threatened bynationalist-imperialist attacks and the self-government declared a state ofemergency in July this year in view of the countless air raids by the Turkisharmy. An invasion and occupation of other parts of the region by Erdogan's armycannot be ruled out, and the attacks are continuing.In addition to reports on the experiences of various volunteers from thesolidarity work in Rojava, the reading also includes an overview of the armedconflicts of the last few months.
