December 2008 was the largest social uprising in Greece since the events of the
Polytechnic in 1973. Without any doubt, its extent, as well as its duration, madeit violently enter history and was characterized as the greatest insurrectionaryevent of the 21st century in continent of Europe. ---- The murder of the15-year-old student Alexandros Grigoropoulos by the cops E. Korkoneas and V.Saraliotis was the occasion to externalize the accumulated anger of the oppressedagainst the state. It was precisely the moment when social anti-violence and thepolitical and organizational values of social solidarity, direct action, equality, anti-hierarchy and self-organization spread to a large part of societyand especially to that of the youth. ---- In reality, December 2008 had a deephistorical, political, and social background connected to the movement ofanarchists who, even in the most difficult repressive periods, were "preparing"the uprising. The period 2006-2007 is a turning point, as the struggle given bythe students, against the revision of Article 16 and the passing of the frameworklaw for universities, pushed tens of thousands of them throughout the Greekterritory into occupations, clashes, and marches for almost a year and culminatedin the massive confrontational march of March 8, 2007, in which the Syntagma areawas held by protesters for hours for the first time. The dynamics of thestruggle, the persistence of thousands of people to overthrow the plans of thestate with months-long occupations, weekly demonstrations and clashes withrepressive forces, the moments when youths and other activists met at thebarricades, broken by the terror of ideological warfare and repressive violence ,the moments when the logics of détente and mediation were overcome on the road, when the limits of passive protest dictated by legitimacy were breached, allthese moments opened a path of wider rupture with laws and institutions. On the night of December 6, 2008, the anarchists, with the experience of all theprevious years, immediately occupied the Polytechnic, making it a center ofstruggle. But none of them expected the massiveness and rage that would beexpressed that night by the youth. The slogan "We haven't said the last wordyet... These nights belong to Alexis", vibrates the entire area. On Monday,December 8, the rebellion becomes general. Students all over Greece holddemonstrations, occupy their schools and attack at least 20 ATs. In the evening,a grand demonstration takes place, during which many thousands clash until themorning with the police, while banks and luxury shops are destroyed. In the nextthree weeks the uprising will continue with intensity, mass participation, broadcomposition of subjects and an unprecedented diversity of actions andcounter-structures. From the very first days, the internationalist solidaritytowards the insurgents has been manifested in various metropolises abroad, aswell as on December 19, during a student march in Propylaia, which heard amessage of solidarity from Chiapas, Mexico. From the flames of December emerged the worst nightmare of every ruler, and forthis very reason 14 years later we see every day the cruelest and most brutalside of the state-capitalist system. In 2009, the state, analyzing and accountingfor the events of December, glorifies its counter-insurgency campaign, targetingthe anarchist movement and the squatters that house it. The evictions ofsquatters, most recently that of Mundo Nuevo in Thessaloniki, the degradation ofthe neighborhood of Exarchia by the drug mafias and then the imposition of anoccupation army to "gentrify" it, the framed indictments, the provocations andthe imprisonment of anarchists are permanent and continuous tactic of the statefrom 2009 until today and not a communication policy of a government. In 2019,the university asylum, which housed an entire fighting history, as well as hostedthe struggle centers of the rebellion, formed fighting consciousnesses and wasthe connecting element of temporally discontinuous struggles for freedom, isabolished. The Kerameos-Chrysohoides law that brought repression into our schoolsand imposed class barriers in education, cannot but be part of the preventivecounter-insurgency precisely because the political sterilization of theuniversity will only produce non-thinking and law-abiding citizens ."The passion for destruction is also a creative passion." Mikhail Bakunin. The December uprising left behind ruins. And out of the destruction the anarchistmovement flourished. The rebellion ceased to be a utopia and the "end of history"was brought down to the fiery barricades. "December is an image from the future",the walls were written at the time. And it is true. It gave, and still givestoday, inspiration and impetus to the games. It engraved deep into ourconsciences that there can be no peace until we take revenge for Michalis,Alexis, Nikos, Zak/Zackie oh, Vassilis and all the victims of state andcapitalist brutality.December left as the most basic legacy for the anarchist movement, not answers, but questions. The basic question of the transition to another society, thequestion of how you go from spontaneous rebellion to social revolution. We, asanarchist students, consider that a condition for this passage is the formationof the subject as such, emphasizing at the same time its political character, butalso its social dimension. A structure organized on anarchist ideals, on those ofself-organization and solidarity, against any hierarchy, on the basis ofhorizontal organization. The student movement from below must find ways and exitsof collectivization, ways of organization, with structures and actions, defendingeverything that the December uprising left behind, aiming to continue them, thenext step towards the total overthrow of the state system and the creation ofthis new world born from our memories, struggles and values.
