institution of the prison, the 41 bis and the life imprisonment are real forms of
torture. The 41 bis with the isolation and the enormous restrictions on air,
visits, telephone calls, correspondence, aims at the annihilation of the
faculties and of the person himself. The life sentence prevents access to the
so-called penitentiary benefits, such as outside work, home care, exit permits,
to those convicted of specific crimes who do not collaborate with state justice,
it aims to bend the person not only and not so much to actually obtain
information but as a form of submission.

In a phase like the current one, marked by a growing repression against movements
of struggle and forms of dissent, we are witnessing a real anti-anarchist
judicial drift firmly denounced in an appeal promoted in October by twenty
lawyers which soon exceeded one hundred signatures.

In this context, standing alongside those who fight against the 41 bis and the
life imprisonment impediment becomes important on several levels.

To reject the application of these real forms of torture against Alfredo Cospito.

To stop the anti-anarchist judicial drift, whereby those who refer to anarchist
ideas are increasingly frequently sentenced to very serious sentences, subjected
to special prison regimes, prosecuted for disproportionate crimes compared to the
disputed facts. Suffice it to say that the crime of attempted murder, the
aggravating circumstance of terrorism and even the crime of massacre against the
security of the state have been added in recent years to the classic frame-up of
crimes of association. The latter, as underlined by several parties, is used in
this repressive drift to define facts that did not cause any victims, while it
was not used for either the Piazza Fontana massacre or the Bologna massacre.

To prevent the specific case and the more general authoritarian tightening in
place from creating precedents, leading to an increasingly widespread application
of the 41 bis in political repression, and to a more general drift of repression
of dissent, up to the systematic application of a true and own criminal law of
the enemy.

provision, decree-law 162 of 31 October, sets further bars to the cage of life
imprisonment, effectively tightening this measure.

numerous groups, collectives and personalities have expressed solidarity with
those who are leading the hunger strike. However, it would be important that the
positions taken turn into concrete initiatives, because the solidarity commitment
and the fight against the 41 bis should have a wider and more mass character.

In 2022, the highest number of suicides in the last 10 years was recorded in
Italian prisons, together with the cases of beatings that are reported and the
massacre that took place in penitentiaries during the riots in March 2020, this
represents the drama of the prison condition. But the mere deprivation of liberty
already constitutes daily violence. The fight against the 41 bis, life
imprisonment and the High Surveillance, as well as rejecting the repressive drift
in progress, can serve to question prison and the social order that produced it,
that of a world based on oppression and exploitation. For the freedom of all and all.
