On the occasion of the centenary of his death, we are starting a series of texts
dedicated to the famous writer and former anarchist Jaroslav Hasek. ---- We havealready devoted three years to a significant figure of the anarchist movement -nine years ago as part of the series of texts Bakunin 2014 (it was acommemoration of the two hundred years since the birth of Mikhail Bakunin), theyear before last it was the series Kropotkin 2021 (on the occasion of thecentenary of the death Peter Kropotkin) and last year one volume was publishedevery month as part of the Magón 2022 series (we commemorated one hundred yearssince the death of the Mexican revolutionary Ricardo Flores Magón). Thanks tothis, we realized, among other things, that if we want to study the life and workof some anarchists, it is good to devote some time to it and not beat him or herup with one article.For this year, it is directly offered to stay at home and focus attention on onevery interesting person, who at one time worked as an editor or contributor toanarchist publications (Omladina, Nová Omladina, Chudas or Komuna) and in a waypreserved his entire short life a certain anarchist attitude towards the world.He had many friends among the anarchists and participated in the life of theanarchist movement in 1903-7. Yes, it is Jaroslav Hashek, whose death anniversarywe commemorate today, January 3, 2023.Jaroslav Hashek (1883-1923) is one of the most famous Czech writers, the authorof many hundreds of short stories and humorous novels, but especially of theworld-famous novel The Fate of the Good Soldier shvejk during the World War.Thanks to the fact that this book has been translated into 58 languages, Hashekranks among the most famous Czech writers in the world. Even those who don't haveit in their library (or don't even have a library) know this work at home,because at least once a year his most popular film adaptation with RudolfHrushínský in the lead role is shown on most Czech TV channels.In addition to the series on our website, where we want to present especiallyshort stories published by Hashek in the anarchist press, this year we areplanning to dedicate the spring issue of the anarchist review Existence toJaroslav Hashek and at the same time publish a book in which Hashek plays acentral role.
