Dear New Yorkers,

When the water stored underneath New York City’s land rises with higher seas and more intense rain, so does the risk of floods — especially in places where the water table is high, or the land lies especially low.

Groundwater is an under-the-radar threat to our coastal city. And there are huge gaps in knowledge of existing water levels.

The Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island have not had consistent monitoring. The city Department of Environmental Protection and the United States Geological Survey monitored Brooklyn and Queens for about half a century, but stopped nearly a decade ago.

A new collaboration to study the issue is on the horizon. A five-year program to monitor groundwater levels and quality in 150 wells across the city is set to launch in the next six months, THE CITY has learned.

Some other items of note:

  • More than 600 adjunct and non-tenure track professors at Fordham University are threatening to strike at the end of the month if the university does not meet their demands. They say they want higher wages, better health benefits and pay parity.

  • Our newsroom’s own criminal justice reporter Reuven Blau co-authored, with the Daily News’ Graham Rayman, a new book, RIKERS: An Oral History, published this week. In an excerpt in THE CITY, former detainees, defense attorneys and corrections officials tell how “the box” — solitary confinement — works at the island’s jails. “Eventually you find yourself counting the cockroaches that come through your doors … People go crazy in there.”

  • THE CITY’s guide on how to safely charge, store and maintain your e-bike and batteries is now available in a printable and shareable flier. If you’d like to help us spread the word on e-bike safety, download the Spanish or English version, print copies and distribute them in your neighborhood, through your local library, in your building and other places you think e-bike riders may visit. Or share the links with New Yorkers you know.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Wednesday's Weather Rating: 5/10. Unsettled weather is out of the way (for now), and high temperatures will reach near 50° F before dropping this afternoon with partly cloudy skies. A blustery west wind will usher in cooler weather tonight. The vibes really aren't too bad!

THE KICKER: Kendrick, Lizzo and Lil Nas X are coming to Queens this summer. The lineup for the Governors Ball music festival is out and for the first time ever, the event will take place in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Wednesday.

Love,
THE CITY
