Dear friends –
In Russia, trans people are one of the most vulnerable and discriminated groups in the prison system.
Trans folks face immense challenges that make a difficult life even harder. In prison, many trans inmates face misgendering, insults and humiliation, prohibition of necessary hormones and wearing clothes of one's gender, violence, sexual abuse, forced labor, and a high risk of suicide.
One trans prisoner shared that they were forced to go through a "complete detransition."
The Russian prison system considers trans life so worthless, authorities don't even collect statistics about them. Since transgender people are invisible to the system, their needs and problems are also invisible.
Russian authorities must transform the treatment and care of trans folks in their custody.
Will you sign the petition, started by the Alliance of Heterosexuals and LGBT for Equality, demanding immediate action from Russia's Commissioner for Human Rights? Together, we can make sure the prison system creates new recommendations based on experts' advice to ensure the rights of transgender prisoners.
