Dear New Yorkers,

Mayor Eric Adams has proposed cuts to city government. The other Adams, Speaker Adrienne Adams, says they cannot stand.

In her State of the City speech yesterday, the City Council’s leader took a strong stance on hiring people to fill thousands of vacant city jobs and urged restored funding and staffing at agencies citywide.

“We cannot wait for the last domino to fall. The city must act now to fully fund and staff our city agencies,” she said.

THE CITY took a look at her first year in office and found that many in the Council say she’s been a steady leader, and patient and thoughtful with members of the city’s legislative body. She got her training for the job in a business career, then as district manager for Queens Community Board 12 — the second-largest in the city.

Yet huge challenges lie ahead. In their second year as leaders, both Adamses will tackle even more fraught budget negotiations as the city faces an influx of migrants that has cost the city hundreds of millions of dollars — all while emergency federal funds that flooded in during the pandemic are drying up.
