During the weekend of March 24 to 26, UCL activists from all over France traveled
to Deux-Sèvres to fight against water grabbing. Between the violence of policerepression and the euphoria of the gathering, the activists look back on theirexperiences during this historic mobilization. ---- Several members of UCLresponded to the call of the Uprisings of the Earth and Basins no thank you toparticipate in the water defense weekend organized around Melle from March 24 to26, 2023. For the most determined, the weekend began on Friday, with a pressconference in Lusignan and the reception of a convoy of tractors. The day endedwith setting up camp near Sainte-Soline. Other comrades were able to attend thefirst conferences organized on Friday in Melle, before going (not withoutdifficulty) to the camp. After an eventful night under the storm, the activistsjoined the various processions of the demonstration. In the crowd of themobilization, more than 30,000 people according to the organizers, it wasdifficult for the libertarians to find themselves, and the red and black flagsremained swarmed throughout the processions.A violent and unprecedented repressionMost of the comrades present, whatever their positions in the processions, had toface police violence. Some were attacked by tear gas fire from the mobilegendarmes and the water cannon as they approached the basin; the others, as theyparaded to approach, also had to come under tear gas and grenades. All of themshare the observation of the violence suffered and the shock of the number ofwounded people after the police attacks. Several comrades remain traumatizedduring the days and weeks following the mobilization. With a little hindsight, and in view of the very serious human consequences, most of the comrades presenton the spot question the strategy adopted and the objective (especially symbolic)of entering the basin. However, the unprecedented scale of the mobilization and the internationalizationof the defense of water give hope to activists for the success of this fight. Theevent last March will at least have made visible the issues of sharing andpreserving water. The criticisms leveled against the previous strategic choicesare only the beginning of a common reflection towards new modes of action: themovement is far from stopping! And because moving water cannot be stopped withpolice cordons or decrees, police repression and the threat of disbanding theEarth Uprisings have only strengthened the resolve of activists and links thathave been created between the different organizations supporting the struggle. No bassaran!https://www.unioncommunistelibertaire.org/?Megabassines-Temoignages-des-libertaires-a-Sainte-Soline_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.caSPREAD THE INFORMATION
