At the start of 2023, the UCL anti-fascism commission offers an assessment of the
situation of the far right in France and a reminder of our main strategicorientations. ---- The far right seems to have entered a new stage of itsstrengthening. All over the world, it wins elections (Sweden, Italy, Israel,etc.) and, when it loses them, tries to cling to power by force, as in Brazil inJanuary 2023. Even more, we observe an increase in attacks by fascists: in Francealone, we note the assassination of Federico Aramburu by the former member of theGUD Le Priol in March and the murderous attack against the Kurdish democraticcenter in Paris on December 23, probably linked to the Turkish fascistgovernment's dirty war.These two attacks are only the visible part of the accelerationist dynamic, whichsees more and more individuals or small groups arming themselves in order toorganize attacks and trigger the "civil war" they hope against the racializedpopulations, gender minorities and the left.An increasingly uninhibited fascist violenceThis observation is widely shared beyond the anti-fascist milieu, since the UNSecretary General makes the far right "the main source of terrorism in Westerncountries. The greatest threat of terrorism today comes from the far right,neo-Nazism and white supremacy." According to Europol, France is particularlythreatened since it accounts for 45% of arrests concerning far-right terrorism[1].This threat is also embodied in increasingly numerous and violent identitygroups, present and active throughout the territory, from Lyon to Montpellier,from Savoie to Caen via Paris. Zemmour's electoral campaign gave a dynamic and adesire to act to many far-right young people, who however did not find anelectoral outlet following his defeats, and therefore turned to street groups[2].Knowledge is a weapon! For 10 years, the collective La Horde has regularlypublished a cartography of the far right. This initiative is now taken up at thelocal level by many collectives.Credit: The HordeDespite their historical differences, members of many of these groups cametogether during this campaign, and forged ties between the towns. We saw it onthe evening of the semi-final of the France-Morocco World Cup, where coordinatedgroups attacked gatherings of supporters mainly of North African origin in tencities.It is also necessary to underline the links of these groups with theinstitutional forces which support them. The police and the justice system didnot react to these attacks, while the media prepared the ground for days, warmingpeople's minds with racist tirades and trivializing massive violence in advance.The presence of 88 RN deputies in the Assembly gives an expression legitimized bythe bourgeois political game to these panics constructed from scratch, and makesit possible to transform the fantasies of a few reactionaries into a centralpolitical subject.In the Face of Fascism, Never Give Up, Get OrganizedAt UCL, we are obviously worried about the current situation. The place taken bythe multiple branches of the far right, its overall strategy of distributing workat the ballot box, in Parliament and in the streets, should make us aware that arace is underway against the seizure of power by the fascists.In this context, the ability of the social movement to counter, or even tocounter-attack in the face of the government's various anti-social measures willbe decisive in driving back the forces and ideas of the far right. UCL activistswill continue, wherever they are, to participate in this dynamic again this year,particularly in the movement against the pension reform which is now underway.The imposture of far-right social discourseBeyond that, we will continue to the end to oppose the fascists wherever theyshow up, and to build the anti-fascist struggle, by supporting trade unioninitiatives such as VISA or by building broad, democratic and united local andnational fronts against the far right.Within UCL, we encourage local groups to train using the tools of our committee:notebook and training tour.
