Nationalist poisonThe clashes of 29 May rekindled the spotlight on an area which officially becameindependent from Serbia in 2008, but in fact detached from it in 1999 thanks toNATO intervention. In Kosovo the majority of the population is Albanian speaking, but not in thenorth where Serbs are the majority. In recent months, the request for greaterautonomy from Pristina was rejected by the government, which called new electionsin some northern municipalities. The local population boycotted the elections:the new mayors, all Albanian speakers, were elected by 3.37% of the population. On May 29, the new mayors were due to take office in four northernmunicipalities.
