Showcase for tourists? Turin between exclusionary redevelopments and the
precariousness of poor and migrant lives ---- We have launched two days of studyand discussion on the future of Turin. The first, on the arms industry, was heldon 25 May, the second, on the showcase city, was held on 9 June. ---- We talkedabout it with one of the two speakers, Giovanni Semi, a sociologist, teaches atthe University of Turin and is the author of numerous studies on gentrificationprocesses in the shadow of the Mole. ---- Climate and capitalism ---- Capitalism,we know, is an anomic machine animated by the logic of profit at all costs, whichgrinds the lives of the less valuable and easily replaceable gears, such as menand women put to work on the best terms the bosses can negotiate.As long as the view that capitalist growth was potentially infinite prevailed,some believed that capitalism could be corrected with social democracy. Todayeveryone knows that infinite growth on a planet with limited resources isimpossible. Not only. The destructive capacity of the non-human environment hasbecome such as to trigger a climate change that is rapidly reaching the point ofno return.The kids who take to the streets with the placards "we don't have a planet B"effectively hit the mark. However, after a few years the momentum of thosemovements quickly petered out, because pressuring those responsible for thedisaster to change course is a losing strategy.Not only.The capitalism of a thousand toys exerts such a fascination that it is oftenimpervious to criticism and even to common sense. You live as if there is notomorrow.If we want there to be a tomorrow, we need a radical transformation of theimaginary and of political and social relations.We talked about it with Massimo Varengo of the Libertarian University of MilanMilitary missions abroadOn May 1, the government approved military missions abroad for 2023. Theprevailing reference framework remains unchanged, focusing on the very extensivenotion of the enlarged Mediterranean, which includes continental Europe, theMiddle East including the Arabian Peninsula and the Persian Gulf , Africa in itsnorthern and sub-Saharan belt, the Horn of Africa up to the Gulf of Guinea,passing through the Sahel.But alongside this substantial confirmation in terms of lines of action and areasof interest that have been defined for some years now, what is clearly emergingis the substantial novelty of this 2023: the Indo-Pacific where a naval presenceis expected to be maintained.
