day" ---- Can we criticize the press without undermining the freedom of the press? The critical speeches of the press, of the media system are often accused ofundermining this sacrosanct Freedom of the Press as if it were not possible, evenlegitimate, to question these two terms: Freedom and the Press . ---- Yet freedomis not understood in the same way whether one is, for example, libertarian,liberal or libertarian. Similarly, the Press does not form a whole, a unit madeup of the same essence, whose interests are by nature intrinsically linked. Let'stake two publications at random, CQFD and Le Figaro, it is obvious that neithertheir editorial line, nor their economic model, nor their internal functioningcan be compared. And yet both are good press.Dominique Pinsolle's book deals with the question of this salutary and necessaryanti-capitalist critique of the media. It starts from the observation thatFreedom of the Press is defended by almost everyone, including by politicalforces which have fiercely fought against it (as may be the case for the Republicor secularism), but that the criticism of the press, and/or of the illusion ofthe freedom it enjoys, are they much less widespread. The historian questionsthese evidences from a historical point of view and his lessons are invaluable.Faced with the scholastic narrative - history is always written from the point ofview of the dominant - there is another story of the struggle for freedom of thepress which is also and above all an anti-capitalist struggle. Dominique Pinsollegives us here a story not written from the point of view of press bosses but frombelow.
