The war seen from Niscemi, this is the title of the conference organized by the
NO MUOS movement on Saturday 27 May in the main square of Niscemi. Preceded by abrief presentation by Pippo Gurrieri, who focused on the mayor's omissionsregarding the monitoring of the electromagnetic impact of the MUOS dishes and the46 NRTF antennas, especially now that they are particularly active, he took thefloor for around fifty minutes Antonio Mazzeo who brilliantly framed the questionof Italy's participation in the war in Ukraine, with its bases from Aviano toSigonella to Niscemi. He precisely described the military actions carried outover the skies of Ukraine by unmanned aircraft that took off from the Sigonellabase and from Romanian bases where Italian and NATO warplanes are stationed; onSigonella he spoke of the expansion of the runway already underway - on land"expropriated" from Mario Ciancio Sanfilippo, owner of "La Sicilia", and aleading exponent of the Sicilian mafia bourgeoisie - to transform the base,already the world capital of drones, also in the world capital of tanker planesnecessary for the in-flight refueling of fighter-bombers. A complete expositionof how the conflict in Ukraine is actually a global conflict that has dragged oursociety into a war, as a logical consequence of a long period of militarization.The role of Sicily in the current armed clash between opposing imperialisms hasbeen denounced, noting how the anti-militarists have been saying these things foryears and everything today proves the struggles and the information given right.In his impassioned intervention, Mazzeo did not overlook the issue of migrants,that of health threatened by electromagnetic waves (the situation in Lampedusa isextremely serious), that of the shooting ranges that are being built up in Sicily(see his in-depth article in this same issue) and the opposition activated in thecountries concerned (Nicosia and Gangi in particular). To conclude with the issueof the bridge over the Strait and its military implications which, being one ofthe conditions set by the EU for any major work, would imply asupermilitarization of the area of the strait and an almost doubling of theexpenditure currently envisaged at 14 billion euros .Among the speeches that followed the main report, it should be emphasized that ofa Niscemese citizen, Pino Marcello, who recently suffered the loss of his wifedue to cancer, and during the via crucis between hospitals and health facilitieshe discovered how high the percentage of citizens of Niscemi affected by cancer,and, conversely, how there are no statistics, researches, data that deepen thissituation. This intervention confirmed the complaints of the movement on the sameissue. A student from Catania also spoke and denounced the army's interference ineducation and the recent militarist event held at the Porte di Catania shoppingcenter, interrupted with a blitz by NO MUOS activists.This last event, which we dealt with in this newspaper two issues ago, took placeunder the slogan: "Aim for your future" and intended to promote enlistment in thearmed forces as an employment opportunity; a very expensive militaristicadvertising system, with the complicity also of schools and families, involvedbehind the invitation to participate in sporting events, or in demonstrations ofmilitarist virility and direct contact with tanks and other instruments of war.On May 18, a group of activists broke into the pavilion with a banner bearing theinscription "We will not be cannon fodder", causing an initial moment ofupheaval, before being isolated by the intervention of men in camouflage overalls.On May 24, however, the President of the Defense Commission of the Chamber ofDeputies Nino Minardo, an honorable member elected in Modica on the Lega lists,after having been for years in Forza Italia, scion of a family of oilmen andowner of the main commercial TV in the area, Video Region , visited the MUOSstation of Niscemi, accompanied by the United States Consul General in NaplesTracy Roberts-Pounds, and by the mayor of Niscemi Conti, all welcomed by CaptainAaron Shoemaker, Commander of the Naval Air Station of Sigonella. A visit aimednot so much at raising the critical points of the plant (which, as we know, isthe subject of restructuring projects due to the strong hydrogeological risk ofthe site), and the question of the failure to monitor the electromagnetic impact,but rather "enhance the presence of the station and its relations with theterritory. This is why I am convinced - Minardo declared - that it is necessaryto maintain constant relations and coordination between the Italian Defence, theAmerican presence, the Sicilian Region and local bodies. I will promote this pathby giving it a permanent character considering that it is not an occasionalpresence but a strategic one". Words of circumstance, from which what is not saidemerges more than what is reiterated. And that is the governmental vassalage tothe American masters, whose presence will be lasting and to whose wars we mustbow as we have always done.We point out another front for the Sicilian No War movement: the arrival at thePalermo Naval Shipyards at the end of May of the Cavour aircraft carrier to be"suitable" for war operations in the Indo-Pacific area, a region where theItalian government intends to send a squadron of naval assets (in addition to theCavour, a destroyer, a hull and a squad replenisher) to operate with the alliesin an anti-Chinese function. A further militarist and warmongering escalation,the Italian one, destined to fuel international tensions and extend theconflicts.
