The third of the workshops we organized this semester was devoted to dominance
techniques and how to recognize them, how to defend against them and how toprevent them. Techniques such as ridicule, invisibility, non-information,accusation or the technique that can be called "neither way" cause the creationand maintenance of power structures. And since the struggle against suchstructures is an essential theme of anarchism and anarcho-syndicalism, weconsider it necessary to constantly learn how to respond to these techniques. Itcan be at workplaces, at schools, but also in activist collectives.At the workshop, we discussed each of the mentioned techniques and tried toanalyze the different situations in which they are manifested. Such practices areso widespread in and outside the workplace that there was much to share and thinkabout. The practical tasks, which we worked out in groups and then discussedtogether, helped with this.Each of the techniques can be directly defended/reacted, but prevention is alsopossible, such as creating rules or procedures that are based on values such assolidarity and mutual aid.The workshop focused mainly on the existence of power relations outside ofpersonal relationships. We were more interested in the techniques of dominance inorganizational structures, in institutions, in workplaces, but the interpersonallevel could not be avoided either. After all, we understand power only in themost obvious sense as a form of unfreedom, coercion or restriction by theinstitutions of the state or capital.There are other aspects of power that oppress us and prevent us from fullyrealizing our lives and potential. It is therefore also important how we treateach other, at our organizational meetings or in our homes. We can consciously orunconsciously apply dominance techniques to each other. And when that happens, weshould know how to react.It is important to be able to stand up against those who accuse us ("you shouldhave found out", "that's logical, what do you not understand?!"), deliberatelyexclude us from communication (concealing the meeting or their actions at a timewhen we can't participate; talking in a language that people don't understand),they make fun of us ("she talks like a baby in the market") or make us invisiblein real situations or in the way they (not) express themselves about us.However, we are not only interested in opposing something. At the same time, werealize that it is also important to create structures, relationships and culturewithout dominance, power and hierarchies in our activities and lives.
