In March 2023, the French and British states announced the forthcoming
opening of a new administrative detention center (CRA) on the northern
coast of France, funded by the United Kingdom.

The CRAs are prisons where the French state confines people who do not
have the "good papers" pending their expulsion from the country. There
are already several dozen throughout France, including one in Coquelles,
near Calais. Violence and mistreatment against prisoners is a daily
occurrence there.

This new project is part of the racist and security logic of France and
the United Kingdom, as well as all European countries, which spend
billions of euros in the militarization of borders, policing and
harassment of people exiled.

While the majority of the inhabitants of the region suffer, like the
exiled people, from great precariousness, it is time to put an end to
the policies of confinement and deportations. In addition to being cruel
and inhumane, these policies are costly and ineffective: despite all the
mistreatment they suffer here, exiled people continue to come to escape
poverty and conflicts, from which Western states are often largely
responsible.

We call for increased initiatives to prevent, by all necessary means,
the opening of this new CRA, or any other place of this type anywhere in
the territory, as well as to push for the closure of those already existing.
