WORLD WORLDWIDE GERMANY FREIBURG News Journal Update - (en) Germany, Freiburg, FAU: Against lousy working conditions in the catering industry! Rally on September 23rd | 7:00 p.m. | Kaiserstuhlplatz (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

We read it again and again in various media: There is a glaring shortage

of staff in the catering industry. No wonder, as the working conditionsin many companies are lousy: low wages, irregular working hours, understaffing and a lot of stress. ---- As a basic union, we also oftenobserve violations of applicable labor law: too few breaks, unpaidovertime, no continued payment of wages in the event of illness or nopassing on of tips to the workforce. ---- In order to improve conditionsin the catering industry, a collective agreement that has been declaredgenerally binding applies to all businesses in Baden-Württemberg. Thisprovides, among other things, up to 30 vacation days per year, bonuseson public holidays, Christmas bonuses, guaranteed rest days and extravacation pay. However, many employees - especially non-German speakers - do not knowabout their rights. In our experience, some bosses take advantage ofthis. Those affected often don't dare to defend themselves against it!The same thing happened to a non-German-speaking member of our baseunion: He was employed at McNamara's Irish Pub and was neither paid forholiday bonuses nor for his vacation. After his termination, he had towait a long time for his urgently needed wages. The boss only paid afterseveral tips. The holiday surcharges and vacation compensation are stillmissing. When the colleague tried to assert his claims with the help of hisunion, the ex-boss responded with a counterclaim: He wants compensationfrom the FAU for a flyer campaign in which labor law information wasdistributed to the pub's employees. But we will not be intimidated by such maneuvers! Workers have rightsand we will not allow ourselves to be prevented from informing themabout their rights!Come to the rally! Let's show that we are not alone, but that we fightin solidarity with each other to ensure compliance with minimumstandards and, in particular, for better working conditions! An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us!That's why we're meeting on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023 at 7 p.m. onKaiserstuhlplatz.Do you work in the catering industry?
