Gang rape in Palermo. Cruel, stupid, inexcusable. Indignation, anger,
protests, marches. ---- A deep-rooted patriarchal and chauvinist culturemerges with the lost lives of the suburbs, with the daily violence towhich they conform, and with the sense of impunity deriving fromconsidering it "natural" to violate a woman considered a simple object.All filled with social media intoxication, the search for theexceptional fact that can magnify a rotten but unaware ego. ---- Thesuccession of episodes of this kind, without respite, without givingrelief, produces frustration and a sense of impotence. The repeatedphrases appear rhetorical: more sexual education in schools, greaterattention from families, increasing the culture of respect.But which schools? but which families? but what respect? There areneighborhoods where the school has failed, the dispersion is enormous,education is in the streets, in the gambling dens, if not in theprisons, where perhaps parents and children come and go and respect isconfused with mafia honour. A world that often ignores, or confuses, theright criticisms, analyzes and proposals with the ideas and claims of anadversary, enemy system.It's a war. It always has been. But we must be careful and avoid thatthe fight against patriarchy and gender violence is perceived as anexpression of enlightened bourgeois elites.Rape culture, however, is not just a problem of marginalized people orviolent youth gangs; it is present in every social class, becausepatriarchal culture, misogyny, machismo cross classes, religions,generations. But the events in Palermo or Caivano throw social aggravatingcircumstances in our faces that cannot be ignored. And they show us howthe authoritarian, capitalist and liberal, patriarchal and fascistsystem is corroded inside, unreformable, to be thrown away.
