control of the Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh with the consent ofMoscow. Azerbaijan may now promise "peaceful" normalization, but thethreat of ethnic cleansing is real. ---- At the end of the war which, inthe fall of 2020, saw the defeat of Armenia, Azerbaijan reconqueredterritories occupied since 1994 by Yerevan. Nagorno-Karabakh, anemblematic Armenian enclave within its borders, had for its part beenplaced under the protection of the Russian army.Putin promised peace negotiations between his two vassals. But his headwas elsewhere and, since the bloody invasion of Ukraine in 2022, IlhamAliyev, the mafia dictator who reigns in Baku, had never stopped testingthe permissiveness of Russian imperialism, by multiplying militaryincursions into Armenia, going so far as to blockade Nagorno-Karabakh.Moscow had systematically allowed this to happen. At the beginning ofAugust 2023, a UN report spoke of a situation of "starvation", in alogic of "genocide".It was in vain that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian called onthe Russian state to respect its commitments. At the beginning ofSeptember, in desperation, he turned to the United States. It wasundoubtedly the gesture too many, which convinced Putin to give thegreen light to an Ilham Aliyev who was pawing with impatience.Twenty-four hours and 200 deaths later, Nagorno-Karabakh capitulated tothe Azerbaijani assault. The legitimate fears of the Armenian populationThe enclave therefore came back under the control of Baku. How can wenot share the fear of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh, whenwe know the history of the Azerbaijani state and its current reality?Let us remember that this state, run by the mafia clan of Ilham Aliyev,is one of the worst dictatorships on the planet. Let us remember thataligned with the Turkish state, it shares the same distant genocidalroots, which is why it still stands on the denial of the Armeniangenocide of 1915-1918. Let us recall that after the anti-Armenianpogroms of 1988 and 1990 in the Baku region, the population ofNagorno-Karabakh, by referendum, proclaimed its independence. Bakuresponded with armed repression, leading to war between Armenia andAzerbaijan and ethnic cleansing on both sides. The victory of Yerevan in1994 resulted in the military occupation of part of Azerbaijan and afrozen conflict for twenty-five years, a situation dangerously leadingto a new war. Which ended up happening with the Azerbaijani revenge of 2020.Today, it is Nagorno-Karabakh which is becoming an occupied territory, with the threat of a logic of revenge and quiet ethnic cleansing, through bullying and racist discrimination. No to ethnic cleansing!Yes to peace, to a political solution in the Caucasus.Yes to the self-determination of peoples, yes to the self-determinationof Nagorno-Karabakh!Libertarian Communist Union, September 22, 2023Read also:the point of view of an Armenian pacifist, Vicken Cheterian, inLibertarian Alternative from March 2021;the point of view of an Azerbaijani dissident, Mahammad Mirzali, inLibertarian Alternative of May 2021;"Armenia-Azerbaijan: The co-responsibility of the nationalist gear",Libertarian Alternative, December 2020https://www.unioncommunistelibertaire.org/?Contre-toute-tentation-d-epuration-ethnique-au-Haut-Karabakh_________________________________________
