Editor's note: We believe it is of great interest to highlight thevoices of Israeli dissent ---- Any damage to the civilian population isa crime, but today we must remember that this is not a unilateralattack, but part of a reality derived from long years of oppression andccisions. Revenge will bring nothing but more blood. The only way tostop this bloody cycle is to choose peace and equality. ---- October 7,2023. It's a horrible morning. Waking up to alarms and explosions, hearing about the dead, seeing the videos coming from the south andimagining the terror of those who see the Hamas and Jihad militiamenroaming the streets far and wide. As I write, news of even worse eventsis arriving. Horror. Any harm to civilians is a crime, like today'sattack from Gaza, and our thoughts are with the victims and their families. What cannot be said is that it was an attack that came out of nowhere, unilateral, without context, completely unexpected. For weekscommentators have been warning of the growing escalation in theTerritories, of the total and unstoppable control assumed by thesettlers - with the creation of new settlements and pogroms against thePalestinians, and with the provocation of the far-right Israeli MPSukkot who went to Hawara, in the West Bank, with the support of thearmy - and continued clashes in Palestinian towns, around the entrancesto Joseph's Tomb, and new invasions by the Israeli army. This year therehave been more Palestinian deaths caused by Israeli gunfire than therehave been in the last twenty years, and even more Israeli deaths thanthere have been in many years now.Start of moduleEnd of moduleAll this adds to Israel's system of brutaland ongoing oppression against Palestinians, the military regime imposedin the West Bank, and the suffocating blockade of Gaza, which preventsany reasonable human existence for the two million residents of the country.Strip.I write and I feel that these words lose their meaning as the years goby, but this does not make them any less real for those who suffer fromthe lack of running and clean water, those who live with four hours ofelectricity a day, those who suffer from unemployment and of povertywhich are growing at impressive rates. All of this is largely due to theIsraeli blockade and no one in the government is thinking about along-term strategy, what direction we are going in, whether there arealternatives to the increasingly serious clashes that are costing us allthis blood. The only answers offered by the government (but also by alarge part of the opposition) are always stop-gap remedies: there aretunnels, so we will build an underground barrier; there are rockets, sowe intercept them; there are casualties, so we will start another cycleof war, destroy more parts of Gaza and kill hundreds more innocentpeople. But swabs are never a solution. The possible agreement withSaudi Arabia still remains in the background. For years, Netanyahu has sold the Palestinians the story of peace, claiming that the Abraham Accords for cooperation and security can beapplied throughout the Middle East and that this is the path to peace. In practice, it is clear to everyone that it is a question of pullingthe ground from under the Palestinians' feet, of taking away one oftheir last bargaining chips against the regional power that has trampledon them for decades, and which they have no chance of defeatingmilitarily. or diplomatically, after the rest of the world has longsince abandoned them. The agreement with Saudi Arabia, which isreportedly closer than ever, is considered the culmination of theseefforts, and the Palestinians know that after this they will be leftalmost completely alone.None of this justifies anything. Certainly not the killing of civilians. Moreover, it helps to understand why all this is happening, and why thesolution, again, cannot lie in more wars and more blood. Once this Hamasattack is over, the right thing to to do is to think of a new path. Tounderstand, just as in Israel we are protesting against the governmentfor democracy and equality, that the Palestinians have been sufferingfrom the Israeli regime of tyranny for decades and that the right todemocracy and equality belongs to everyone , from the Jordan to the sea. This means, first and foremost, that we must now refuse to go to war inGaza, where once again hundreds of innocents are expected to be killed(and yes, brothers in arms, I am addressing you, who know how tocriticize the government very well regarding Jewish rights, but are youready at the first alarm to rush to bomb civilians.) After that, thiswicked and failed government must be overthrown, because during itsshort term so many Israeli citizens die in vain in the conflict. Therefore it is necessary to end the occupation and the siege and, together with the Palestinians, promote a solution that guarantees abetter future for all of us. In the blood and horror we see now inIsrael this is hard to imagine. But we must remember that even moreblood and terror have been the reality of Palestinian life for decades, that clashes in the streets and in front of homes are an integral partof Palestinian life in the West Bank, that deadly bombs have been areality of life in Gaza for a lot of time. We are not the only ones whofeel horror. What is happening today with the Hamas attacks makes manyof us respond with a desire for revenge, with the desire to mercilesslystrike the other side, because there is no point in talking to them, because "they are human animals". But in the same way they have alsobeen feeling and speaking on the other side, for decades, in the face ofeverything we do to them.Precisely because blood and terror have been an integral part of ourlives for decades, and because there is no other way, we must choosepeace, equality, justice for all.*Hagai Matar is an Israeli journalist and political-social activist.Article taken from https://www.mekomit.co.il, translated and adaptedfrom the Hebrew language.
