The autumn season includes tenmobilizations, from Rouen to Toulouse via Ardèche. On October 14 and 15,it was Bloque Ton Périph' in Montpellier, organized by a collective ofthe same name bringing together several organizations including UCL.Last weekend of October 14 and 15, a major mobilization against auseless road project, the Liaison Inter-cantonale d'Évitement Nord(L.I.E.N) was organized in Montpellier by Bloque ton Périph'[1]. This isone of the ten fall actions of Déroute des routes, a national collectivefighting for a moratorium on destructive road projects[2]. The nextmobilization will be in Ardèche on November 25. The organizers announcenearly 2,000 people mobilized over the two days.[3]The actions werevaried, assemblies, actions to defend the scrubland, demonstrations,cycling... The testimonies of the different Road Rout collectivespresent showed the global aspect of this struggle, against a vision of anetwork road nationally.Indeed, if this project, supported by the department and the metropolis,is sold, as everywhere in the territory, on alleged benefits for localpopulations with the flow of traffic, it is in fact the development ofgoods transport and the capitalism that is targeted!More and more cars and trucksTo pass these projects, their promoters try to minimize their impact onthe environment, to promise time savings to residents or even to passoff the construction of their road as eco-friendly! For the minutessaved, it is a mirage, the increase in the number of roads does notreduce traffic jams, as multiple examples and studies show. And even so,how many hectares would we be willing to see ransacked to save a fewminutes? For minimizing impacts, the case of doubtful gladioli, a protectedspecies threatened by this project, is revealing. When the departmentinvestigated the impact of this road it only counted twenty, when aserious census was carried out by activists and with a bailiff lastspring, five hundred were counted! Finally, for greenwashing, the department is trying to promote the useof crushed oyster shells which would be environmentally friendly. Butthe debate is not whether this polluting project is more or lesspolluting than another! To pollute less, it's quite simple, no new road!Waterproofing soils, destroying hectares of ecosystem, increasing roadtraffic, accelerating metropolisation will never be environmentallyfriendly! It is urgent to oppose all of these road projects and ever moredestructive capitalism!
