On Thursday 7/12, as the Panteio Liberal Scheme, we took the initiative
to intervene in an IDIS event held at our University. IDIS is a faculty
research center with close ties to NATO that has not hesitated to take a
public position multiple times in favor of the genocide of the
Palestinian people. Once again we see that the university is not a
neutral space for the promotion and production of objective knowledge,
but instead serves political interests and is commercialized. Our
faculty is not open to militaristic ideas. We won't let her be. That is
why we did not allow today's IDIS event to take place, titled "The
Future of Southeast Europe", with invited former foreign ministers from
the Balkan countries, among them Nikos Kontzias of SYRIZA. We want our
universities free, without oppressors, without militarists, without
genocidals.
The goal was simply not to have the event happen, which was achieved. We
inform Mr. Kotzias, who so much trumpeted his racing credentials with
the argument that "he has been tortured in the dungeon of the junta"
while we do not, that the stick of the police does not hurt less with a
SYRIZA government. The dungeons of GADA, in which countless comrades and
fighters had been during his rule, used junta methods and torture, and
we know this well. But we also show some understanding. It is reasonable
for him to think that just as he himself sold out to get comfortable, so
too do everyone else act motivated by various "interests". We understand
that it seems difficult in the mind of a man who peddled progressivism,
while signing memoranda and agreements with NATO serving the interests
of the plutocracy, not to be able to believe that there are still people
who have not been sold out, who are fighting for their ideals and whose
radical ideas are not pre-election buzzwords, but deep-rooted beliefs
that shape actions and analyses.
To the rector's authorities we declare once again that we will not
tolerate accomplices of genocidals in our school. We want a university a
place of freedom, a university for unrestrained struggles, and not for
nationalist propaganda. We want academic research that meets the real
needs of society, not the death politics of the Euro-Atlantic axis that
fills the pockets of the military-industrial complex. We will continue
to raise the issue until all university cooperation with security forces
or military supranational organizations ceases, IDIS is abolished, and
all faculty members who have collaborated with repressive forces are
terminated as moral agents in the genocides perpetrated by Israeli and
NATO armies. Let our intervention be a lesson to them that the days when
militaristic loudspeakers threshed freely in Panteio have passed, no
matter how many security guards fill the school.
Our intervention was a small act of solidarity with the people of
Palestine . We call on the student movement as well as the solidarity
anti-war movement to escalate their actions against any body that
contributes or participates directly or indirectly in the genocide of
the Palestinians.
