WORLD WORLDWIDE USA New York NY New York City NYC the city THE CITY News Journal Update - NYC’s climate change future, mayor vetoes two cop bills, who to call if the sidewalk isn’t shoveled
Dear New Yorkers,
What’s in store for New York City in the age of climate change?
New projections from the New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC) confirm that the city will be hotter, rainier and wetter in the coming years — with major shifts hitting the city in the 2030s, less than a decade away.
The latest estimates, for example, project sea levels to continue to rise between half a foot and just over a foot in the 2030s. Annual precipitation is expected to increase by up to 10% in those years, and temperatures could get 2 to 4.7 degrees warmer.
The NPCC’s new predictions will inform the city government’s planning, policies and programs, including how to design projects and where to locate them.
Given what’s to come, the work can’t happen fast enough, said Klaus Jacob, a Columbia University geophysicist who previously served on the NPCC.
“The city is moving in the right direction,” he said, “but compared to how the weather and climate is changing, it’s a snail’s pace, and the climate is a rabbit.”

Monday’s Weather Rating: 4/10. Another day with lots of sunshine! It’s a bit “warmer,” too, with high temperatures in the upper 30s. Still a bit of a chill out there, but the vibes are all right!

On Friday, Mayor Eric Adams vetoed two bills related to law enforcement. The first would require cops to document more interactions with the public, and the other banned solitary confinement at city jails. The move sets up another fight between the mayor’s office and the City Council, where both pieces of legislation passed last year with enough majority to override a veto. Adams is hoping that some of the four newly sworn-in members vote no, or others reverse their vote.
Were you slipping over sidewalk ice last week? Whose job is it to clear the way, and how can you spur some snow-removing action? What about sidewalks next to parks and other public places? Here’s THE CITY’s guide on what to do when someone hasn’t done their sidewalk shoveling.
