her at ease. In the first days of detention, the prisoner was kept in
isolation, forced to continue wearing dirty clothes, including
underwear, without any hygienic support, including toilet paper, a
towel, sanitary pads, even though she was on her period, until, after 35
days the Italian consulate did not deliver the first package. Ilaria is
defended by György Magyar, in Budapest by one of the most famous
Hungarian criminal lawyers, procured for her by her father, without any
support from the Italian Embassy.
In September 2023, when he was able to see them, he told his astonished
parents that the inmates were forced to face "the wall" and were
imprisoned "23 hours a day" in cells in mixed sections, men and women. ,

deficiencies of the Hungarian prison system, where in 2023 the highest

measures.

of another Italian citizen, Gabriele Marchesi, facing the same charges
as Ilaria Salis. The deputy prosecutor of the Court also underlined the
disproportion between the relative modesty of the disputed facts and the
enormity of the proposed sentence.
The second worrying aspect, reported by the lawyers and the family of
Ilaria Salis, concerns the failure to translate part of the procedural
documents, including the medical reports on the injured people,
currently accessible only in Hungarian, as well as the inmate's
