We are publishing in electronic form the 5th page of the newspaper
"Mavrokkinini Simea" - a special edition for education. ---- The "BLACK
RED FLAG" is a monthly informative political newspaper that circulates
in the western suburbs of Athens. This sheet is a special edition
decided against the backdrop of current developments around higher
education and has been designed exclusively by the students of the
Anarchist Saints Anargyro - Kamaterou Initiative. The aim of the
publication is to circulate in universities and schools, especially
those based in the western suburbs, and it will also be made public for
free reading on the internet in the near future.
The paper's editorials deal with issues regarding the planned
educational restructuring, on the occasion of the bill that has been
announced by the government for the establishment of private
universities, but also more general issues regarding the institution of
education, the process of admission to schools, the continuum of reforms
and the struggles of the student youth. Our common finding is that the
understanding of the purposes of the new bill presupposes its
interpretation in relation to the previous ones and its recognition as a
link in a coherent chain of transformations, which is progressively
moving towards a new neoliberal reality that does not only concern
universities. In other words, it is part of a more comprehensive
restructuring process, which if in other areas of social and economic
life has progressed significantly, in the field of the university it has
encountered obstacles, which are expressed through student resistance
and the different relationships of power that traditionally characterize
it .
Nevertheless, we should avoid the danger of an idealization of the
university that leads to a problematic logic of "defending" "how it is",
in opposition to what it is trying to "be". Just as it would be a
mistake to see the new bill detached from the rest and outside the rapid
social changes that are taking place, so we should not perceive the
university as a detached institution, which is in the hands of the
students, even and symbolically. On the contrary, the university was and
is a class institution, it is ideologically specific and functions as a
field for the export of specialized personnel to meet the needs of
capital's profitability. Public or not, guarded or not, the university
aims at the ideological formation of the young and the feeding of the
capitalist mode of production. In light of this admission, the struggles
against the reactionary reforms of the governments must also begin and
in this light the criticism of their goals should also be conducted.
Greater responsibility, for the broad deconstruction of the university,
is borne by the anarchist forces that act and resist within it.
