On this March 8, 2024, International Working Women's Day, from the CNT
union we once again demand justice and equality for women, vindicating
the approaches and objectives of the anarchist organization Mujeres
Libres, to whom the working class owes so much. Almost a century after
the birth of this organization, women still have a lot to fight for.
---- In the workplace, we continue to be discriminated against: wage
gap, difficulty in accessing employment, concentration of women in the
most precarious sectors, greater temporality and partiality in
contracts, impediments to promotion in our jobs or the inability to
reconcile and raising with resources, which makes motherhood a cause of
impoverishment for women... Added to all this is the violence that, due
to the fact of being women, we suffer within companies: discrimination
based on sex, sexual harassment at work... It is estimated that at least
a third of sexual abuse that occurs takes place in the work environment.
In addition, the sexual division of labor causes domestic tasks to fall
mainly on us. This, added to the shameful lack of resources dedicated to
caring for people in a situation of dependency, means that women end up
having to give up our jobs to care for family members, which means a
lack of economic independence from men. When care is carried out
professionally, outside the family environment, the situation does not
improve: caregivers, home help workers, domestic employees, geriatric
assistants... the jobs that are essential for maintaining life are, in a
capitalist and patriarchal society , the least valued and prestigious,
the lowest paid and are carried out, on numerous occasions, without
being registered with social security or in conditions that resemble
slavery, as is the case of internal workers.
All these conditions that women suffer in the workplace mean that there
is also a gap in pensions. In those cases in which, after many
obstacles, we manage to access a contributory pension or a permanent
disability, this is lower than that of male workers. In many other
cases, women will be forced, in the event of old age or illness, to try
to survive with non-contributory pensions of misery or with the
deception of the minimum vital income.
When, through the union struggle, we stand up against the injustices we
suffer as workers, we encounter repression and criminalization. We want
to remember once again the 6 of Switzerland, in Xixón, who face
sentences of up to 3 and a half years in prison and fines of more than
150,000 euros for being unionists.
Outside the workplace, women suffer all kinds of violence throughout the
world. According to the UN, 137 women are murdered every day by their
partners or ex-partners. In the Spanish state, 101 femicides were
committed last year, 10 so far in 2024, more than half of these murders
have been carried out by partners or ex-partners of the victim. When it
comes to sexual violence, statistics tell us that it is increasing, both
for adult women and girls, and that it occurs outside and within the
family environment. In Spain, a rape was recorded every two hours during
the year 2023 and cases of collective rape increased. Among the forms of
sexual violence, pimping is one of the most brutal and also one in which
the aggressors (whoremongers and pimps) enjoy the greatest impunity. It
is estimated that more than 100,000 women are currently being sexually
exploited in the Spanish state. The CNT considers that prostitution can
in no case be considered work, but rather that it is a form of violence
that, as a society, we must eradicate, without penalizing or
persecuting, in any case, women in prostitution, who have the right to
justice and repair.
Working-class feminism breaks boundaries. We position ourselves, without
half measures, with the women of Gaza, who are suffering a genocide by
the state of Israel and its allies, in the face of the infamous
passivity of the vast majority of the international community, including
the Spanish government. From CNT, we will continue to support the
Palestinian people, standing by their side in this unequal struggle. In
the same way, from CNT we will continue defending the repeal of the
Immigration Law, a criminal law with terrible consequences for those who
arrive in the Spanish State and, especially, for women and their sons
and daughters.
Within the union, there is still a long way to go. Our colleagues have
the responsibility of preventing the patriarchal dynamics that we suffer
outside from being reproduced within the CNT. We organize, together with
them, so that the CNT is a useful and emancipatory tool for working women.
On this March 8, from the CNT, we salute women around the world,
oppressed for being born, demanding to be named, fighting outside and
within the organization against a criminal system: do not let fear and
discouragement paralyze you. Do not stop, because, in your hands and in
your mind, is the victory of those who preceded us and those who will come.
