WORLD WORLDWIDE BELGIUM BRUSSELS - BRUZZ International - News from Brussels - 30-04-2024

30-04-2024

In this edition of BRUZZ International, we take a closer look at the Congolese community in Brussels.
Last Sunday on the show:

Chez Malou

Chez Malou is a Congolese restaurant that opened its doors nine years ago in Matonge, Ixelles. We speak to chef Alberto, who, like owner Malou Bomboka, is from Congo.

"Many Belgians used to live in Congo. This place feels like coming home because they eat the same food here. A lot of people ask for pondu with goat meat."

Congolese Cultural Centre

The centre opened its doors in December 2023 and already organised an exhibition as part of the fifth Festival des Arts Vodoun. Among those working on it were an artist from Haiti and two artists from Benin.

"There is a difference between voodoo and sorcery. Voodoo does no harm. Voodoo saves lives."

Consultant Annie Mutamba

Annie Mutamba was born in Congo, moved to Liège as a child and has now lived in Brussels for about 15 years.

"What is Brussels like compared to Liège? If you had asked me that 20 years ago, I would have said I love Liège and would never move to Brussels.

But now I prefer Brussels. It's very lively here, very international. And the Congolese community here is diverse and open."

Report by Méabh Mc Mahon, Stefano Lapasini.

Nancy Kawaya has been presenting the show 'Entre-Temps' on VoxAfrica since 2019. And now she also works as communications manager at the Congolese Cultural Centre here in Brussels.

"VoxAfrica is a pan-African television channel that reaches six million people around the world, from Cameroon to Congo and from London to Paris. For my show, I sit with people who are trying to change the world."
