We have just learned that before the launch of the first atomic bomb on
Japan, some scientists expressed their concern. There was still plenty!
---- Eighteen years after the dazzling demonstration that we know about,
the ultra-secret archives of American nuclear history have leaked
certain details on the scrupulous offensive which preceded the offensive
itself. Because there had to be scruples for the mushroom to be
legitimate. What is a crime without prior scruples if not a bad news
item that no investigator would want? ---- It is May 1945. The bomb is
ready. It's just a matter of using it. Germany has already capitulated.
Japan is still resisting.
But there is no need to have access to chancelleries or general staffs
to understand that the war is coming to an end. THE
Japanese are still holding on to the ground. This is the last stand.
This is their tradition of honor. In Washington, however,
Truman is busy. He consults his military advisors, experts,
scholars. He is preparing to take, in fact, what we call today
a great moral decision. General Marshall, let's give him back this
tribute, was not very keen on the atomic bomb. We feel
although the object is repugnant to him. He would like us to instruct
the adversary
of the virtues of the bomb by blowing up a purely objective
military, an arsenal or a base of the Japanese fleet. The scientists,
are shared. Seven of them grouped around James Franck, price
Nobel Prize in Physics, are hostile to the use of the bomb. THE
Hungarian physicist Leo Szilard insists that a warning
solemn be addressed to Japan before any recourse to absolute weapons. He
wrote to Truman to this effect, but he will never receive his
petition. Too many important people are framing the president and playing
Pontius Pilate by washing their hands with heavy water. Oddly enough,

This is how one morning in August Truman pressed the
button. He was not judged at Nuremberg because the winners do not pass
never in judgment. He apparently wanted to hasten the end of hostilities,
save American lives. It is an alibi which can appear in
all files. Truly, if Truman wished to curtail the outpouring of
blood, he had a very simple and inexpensive way to
achieve its goal. A diplomatic contact made in Stockholm or
Berne with the representatives of Japan would have made it possible to
obtain -
for a few encrypted telegrams - a peace which would not have
was the day after the apocalypse.
What is most intriguing in this unpacking of radioactive remorse is
that we always ask the Hiroshima question and never the question
Nagasaki. Assuming that the launching of the first bomb
responded to an imperative necessity, what should we think of the second.
Nothing apparently, since no one talks about it. It is therefore that she
has entered into customs. The main thing is not to persuade ourselves
that she came out of it.
Our era is vulnerable less because it accepts war than
because she is intoxicated with the myth of the scientist. She believes
she can
