Libertalia Editions released an activity book at the end of 2023! Could
this be a sign of an gentrification of the Montreal publishing house
which is seeking to establish itself in the growing niche of exercise
books for children or adults? Is the libertarian publishing house giving
in to the sirens of big capital? Nope. This Critical Activity Book is
indeed a new cartridge, even a cartridge belt in itself, which aims to
strengthen our critical arsenal by submitting "to each person's
calculation some of the major problems of our time".
Faced with the abstraction of major contemporary problems such as social
inequalities, the destruction of life or even nuclear power, Ernest
London, aka the Librarian-Armourer, accompanied by Fred Sochard for
illustrations, offers 21 small, fun calculation exercises as much as
terrifying because they are terribly telling and open to discussion.
For example, the first proposes to calculate Lucy's fortune if she had
been paid the minimum wage at the value of 2023 and saved all of her
salaries since her birth 3.18 million years ago, then to answer the
question of whether this cumulative sum would be enough for Lucy to be
one of the ten biggest fortunes in the world today. I'm spilling the
beans, obviously not! We know well that work does not pay, unless you
exploit that of others. Here the example is particularly telling.
So over the pages we will be able to calculate, at the current speed of
extinction of species, how long it will take them all to disappear. How
much was spent around the world on weapons during the "International
Year of Peace"? How many wells could have been built with the sums spent
by the space mission to search for traces of water on Mars? Etc.
This Critical Activity Book thus allows, by resolving in a fun way some
major social issues in our contemporary societies, to take stock of the
damage, but also offers concrete avenues for resolution. A weapon to put
in everyone's hands (including the youngest) and exercises to solve in
collective mode.
