The North and East of Syria (Rojava) has been under attack for months by
the Turkish state and its mercenary troops, an attack supported more or
less under the table by the USA, Russia, NATO and the EU. Cities and
infrastructures such as dams, power plants, factories are bombed daily,
with the aim of occupying entire provinces, forcing the indigenous
populations to flee and imposing an ethnic substitution with inhabitants
of Islamic faith linked to the fundamentalist sectors always protected
by Turkey, which aims to create a buffer zone with which to surround and
suffocate the free territory of Rojava.
The fall of the Syrian Assad regime has set in motion the various
factions of the jihadist galaxy, which are raising their heads and
controlling entire regions with the iron liberticidal rules of the
Sharia, all with the support of Turkey, the true director of the push to
Syria. Rojava thus finds itself having to face their threat and manage
new war fronts, which it is doing with the usual self-denial, even if
this entails having to take away precious energy from the
democratic-revolutionary development of society in addition to the very
real risk of suffering defeats on the field by a well-armed and
well-supported enemy, and of losing further pieces of territory.
Democratic confederalism is a process of self-liberation that we have
always looked at with interest, respected and supported, without for
this reason renouncing a critical vision, in particular with regard to
the role of political forces in determining (and conditioning) the
social processes in progress. The experiment that began on July 19, 2012
contains important elements that cannot be ignored: self-government, the
feminine and anti-patriarchal imprint, environmentalism, the practice of
coexistence and mutual support between different ethnic groups and
religions. This original process of revolutionary autonomy was
implemented in a context of war, aggression, international isolation,
factors that made it complicated and difficult, and yet it was defended
with extreme courage by both male and female self-defense forces, even
if it had to suffer a slowdown.
The release of Abdullah Öcalan, locked up for 26 years in isolation on
the prison island of Imrali, after being sold to the Turkish secret
services by the Italian government (President Massimo D'Alema, Foreign
Minister Sergio Mattarella) is a priority objective: Öcalan represents
the symbol of the unity of the Kurdish people, the glue that holds
together a people imprisoned in their own land, deprived of the most
basic rights, repressed, expelled, erased. A people never tamed that
resists and fights to free itself from the yoke of the oppressors in the
various territories into which Kurdistan has been divided. We do not
like the cult of personality, we know its risks and degenerations, but
we cannot tolerate the imprisonment of a man who has become a symbol of
the hopes for emancipation of the Kurdish people. Öcalan has had the
intelligence to review some statist, nationalist and militarist
positions by stimulating the alternative of self-government and the
feminist and ecological transition; a tortuous path and, from our point
of view, full of contradictions. As a free man he could play an
important role in starting a process of peace and independence for the
entire area.
Our internationalist, constructive and supportive tension must continue
to be, in this phase, increasingly directed towards Rojava and the
Kurdish people in general, setting some immediate objectives: breaking
the isolation and the political media encirclement that is trying to
suffocate it; gathering economic and material resources in order to
contribute to the survival of its populations and their resistance,
including military. These two conditions are priorities and necessary
for the strengthening of administrative autonomy and the resumption of a
revolutionary experiment whose value goes beyond the Mesopotamian area
and concerns the entire planet, wrapped in a spiral of war and
capitalist plunder.
