This year the G7, the network that unites the seven most industrialized
countries, is chaired by the Italian government. The final summit,
attended by heads of state, will be held in Bari in June. ---- From 28
to 30 April the summit dedicated to energy and the environment took
place in the palace of Venaria. ---- The choice to put these two themes
together, bringing the ministers and their Sherpas together in Venaria,
is in itself indicative of the desire to consider environmental
protection a variable dependent on energy orientations, with a very
clear hierarchical relationship .
If you consider that the last COP, dedicated to the ongoing climate
catastrophe, was held in Qatar, a country floating on a sea of gas and
oil, and the next one will be from 11 to 22 November in Azerbaijan,
which owes the own fortune in being an energy hub based mainly on fossil
fuels, it is well understood that the logic of profit prevails over any,
always ambiguous, ecological transition project.
The ecological transition must be a good deal: until it is, fossil fuels
will continue to be the preferred choice of governments and energy
multinationals.
The Plenitude campaign is pounding. Spots, billboards, banners, events,
advertisements show scenarios of "decarbonisation", "circular economy",
"sustainability". In 2019, CEO Claudio Descalzi spoke of a "collective
call to action", of the assumption of "great responsibilities" in the
face of the "need to actively intervene in combating climate change".
Chatter and smoke and mirrors.
This year ENI said clearly that renewables cost a lot and yield little,
so the National Hydrocarbons Authority will continue to invest massively
in gas and oil.
From 2019 to today, thanks to a series of acquisitions, ENI has become
"the second largest E&P - exploration and production - company in
Norway, with total reserves and resources equal to approximately 1.9
billion barrels of oil"
In the deep waters of the "Kutei" basin, in Indonesia, Eni was awarded
the West Ganal exploration block in 2019, with 17 billion cubic meters
of gas from the "discovered" field called Maha.
The exploitation of Egyptian gas fields has reached record levels.
These are just a few examples.
On March 14 this year it presented its Capital markets update 2024-2027,
with which the six-legged dog outlines the industrial development plan
for the next few years.
The central element remains the exploration and production of fossil
fuels: instead of slowing down, ENI accelerates. «Upstream production is
expected to grow at an average annual rate of 3-4% until 2027». This
choice, in stark contrast to what was declared in 2021, will lead to a
significant increase in climatic emissions.
According to Greenpeace Italia, ReCommon and Reclaim Finance, who
carried out an analysis of the six-legged dog's climate strategy,
between now and 2027 «Eni plans to increase oil and gas production and
keep it constant until 2030. By doing so, its production will be 71%
higher than in the net zero emissions scenario."
Clean energy activities remain marginal: «For every euro invested by Eni
in fossil fuels, less than seven cents were invested in sustainable
renewable energy»
Another constant is the close interconnection between numerous Italian
military missions in Africa (but not only) and the interests of ENI.
Military missions abroad including gas, oil and uranium
The government's armed diplomacy to secure the profits of the
multinational oil company extends from Libya to the Sahel to the Gulf of
Guinea. These areas have strategic importance for ENI's interests,
because the major African oil and gas producers are located there. The
objective is the protection of offshore platforms and extraction facilities.
ENI today represents the spearhead of Italian colonialism in Africa.
The flag with the six-legged dog of ENI flies alongside the tricolor
flag in places where desertification and the predation of resources
crush the lives of many of those who live there.
The neocolonial war for the control of energy resources is accompanied
by the offensive against people on the move, to push migrants back into
Libyan prisons, where torture, rape and murder are normal occurrences.
Migrations towards rich countries are the result of the predatory
ferocity of neocolonial policies.
Niger. The new frontier of colonialism made in Italy
Seventy million euros. This is the amount allocated in July 2022 by the
European Union to support the Niger army. Money that Brussels has had
difficulty managing since, at the end of July 2023, the military led by
General Abdourahamane Tchiani deposed President Mohamed Bazoum in Niamey.
Some of the most important member states of the Union have divergent
positions on the subject. France and Germany, for example, are pushing
to withdraw the funds and allocate them to other West African states.
Italy, however, aims to maintain a dialogue with Niamey and find a
compromise with the military junta in power, the self-proclaimed
National Council for the Protection of the Homeland.
The 70 million euros allocated by the EU to equip the Nigerian armed
forces are in fact managed on behalf of the Union by the Defense
Industries Agency (AID), a body controlled by the Italian Ministry of
Defence. A nice nest egg to maintain its military presence in Niger,
after the expulsion of the French and, more recently, the Americans, who
were ordered to abandon the Agadez drone base. In the meantime, in the
sub-Saharan country, beyond the tones of anti-colonial revolt adopted by
the new lords of Niamey, other actors have appeared and established
themselves, China and, since 11 April, the Russians of the Africa Corps
(formerly Wagner), who although not being regular troops, they would be
state employees, not private mercenaries.
Italy maintains good relations with the coup plotters in government and
intends to remain in the country, where it has had its own base for two
years. The Meloni government has declared that the Italian military will
resume training Nigerien troops.
The tricolor military contingent is a fundamental piece in the
outsourcing of the war to migrants and, not secondarily, for the control
of the country's uranium resources. Uranium is the basis of fuel for
nuclear power plants and atomic bombs.
In Italy the pro-nuclear propaganda, now cleared by the COP as a source
comparable to renewables, is increasingly insistent.
Between uranium, migrants and the redefinition of balances and areas of
influence, Italian imperialism is trying to carve out its own space.
Azerbaijani gas, the Armenian question, Leonardo's weapons The Republic
of Artsakh, an enclave in Azerbaijani territory, established between
1992 and 1994, no longer exists: in September 2023, after a year of
siege, it was occupied by Azerbaijani troops with an ethnic cleansing
operation that led to the expulsion of over 100 thousand Armenians. A
few months earlier, Leonardo, with the approval of Defense Minister
Crosetto, had supplied military aircraft and missiles which were used in
the war on Artsakh by soldiers trained in our country.
The openness towards the Baku regime on the part of the entire European
Union has a precise reason: Azerbaijani gas, which has largely replaced
Russian gas in supply to Europe.
In 2023, Russian gas imports into Europe collapsed: from 42% in 2021 to 14%.
For this reason no one has lifted a finger for the Armenian population
forced to flee and it is probable that if Azerbaijan were to attack and
annex the south of Armenia, as it has been promising for some time, the
scenario would not change. And for those who rightly object to the Putin
dictatorship and its hasty and brutal methods, it should be remembered
that Ilham Aliyev behaves with elegance equal to his counterpart in Moscow.
The connection between energy choices, ENI's interests and war with
weapons made in Italy are completely transparent.
From 28 to 30 April in the Royal Palace of Venaria, 7 of the main
people responsible for wars, pollution, exploitation and climate
catastrophe sat down at a table to stage a show that mixed high-sounding
declarations on the planet with chatter about development and well-being
, which, once again, will be linked to the infinite increase in production.
Opposing war and the logic of profit is one of the keys to slowing down
the ongoing environmental catastrophe.
Stopping them is possible. Stopping them is necessary.
Starting from our home.
We fight against Italian neocolonialism, we boycott ENI and the arms
factories, we prevent the return of nuclear power, we block military
missions abroad.
