Het was 1 november en het regende, maar het was ‘zacht voor de tijd van het jaar’ zoals een weerman het zou omschrijven. Op het strand van het Noord-Franse Leffrinckoucke was geen levende ziel te bespeuren. Boven de zee vertoonden de wolken een indrukwekkend schouwspel en ik haalde een keer of dertig mijn telefoon uit mijn broekzak in een poging de natuur te vangen in het frame van een foto. Tot ik plots dacht: “Tiens, zit mijn autosleutel nog wel in mijn broekzak?”. Nee, dat zat hij dus niet meer. En ook niet in mijn jaszak of op welke andere plek ik tastte.
Ik keek naar de zee. Het was vloed en ze was toch al een paar meter opgerukt sinds ik de wandeling was begonnen. Ik keek naar het strand. Het leek immens. Maar dat was ook mijn wil om mijn autosleutel terug te vinden. Desalniettemin moest ik een uur later mijn zoektocht opgeven. Nog eens twee uur later kwam mijn zus mijn reservesleutel brengen. Overkomt het u ook wel eens? Geen zorgen: er is een reden voor. In een stuk in deze mail leest u er alles over. En ik vertel u op een andere keer nog wel wat er gebeurde toen ik twee weken later ook mijn reservesleutel verloor, maar dan op het strand van Oostende.
“De toelatingsproef voor de studies geneeskunde, tandheelkunde of diergeneeskunde is volstrekt wereldvreemd. Waarom toekomstige artsen selecteren op hun kennis van integralen, fysische wetten of hun begrip van zuren en basen? Je kunt ze evengoed selecteren op hun kennis van het Latijn. Dat hebben ze evenveel nodig”
