WORLD WORLDWIDE US USA - New York NY - New York City NYC - the city THE CITY - Police review board drops complaints, seawall lawsuit, bike lanes
Dear New Yorkers,
Last year, the city’s Civilian Complaint Review Board dropped three complaints of misconduct against Kaz Daughtry, a high-profile NYPD detective, after he was promoted six ranks to assistant commissioner.
It was a rare elevation to a civilian position, which is generally deemed to be outside the police review board’s jurisdiction.
Despite that, Daughtry has been photographed directly engaging in police enforcement actions over the past year — while openly wearing a holstered gun on his right hip.
Only non-civilian members of service are allowed to carry an exposed gun, several former NYPD officials said.
Daughtry is a longtime protege of the NYPD’s Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey and, according to news reports, has been granted a direct line to Mayor Eric Adams, who is also close with Maddrey.
Read more here about the three complaints of misconduct against Daughtry, and the board’s decision to drop further review of them.
Friday's Weather Rating: 2/10. ANOTHER day of dreary weather. High temperatures in the low 80s with ridiculously high dew points, drizzle periods of showers. A few severe storms are possible later, too. The vibes remain bleak … for now.

The developers of a major life sciences campus along the East River in Manhattan sued the city on Tuesday for a “fraudulent scheme” to include a floodwall in its planned construction of a tower. The company behind the research hub says the city promised it would cover the cost, only to leave them holding the bag. The area — including Bellevue Hospital, which flooded during Hurricane Sandy — lacks a buffer against storms.
This summer, THE CITY reporters have been hitting the often-blazing pavement to cover all stories that you read right here in the Scoop, like what to do when your apartment is too hot or where to find a place to cool off. All the work our reporters do is made possible by reader support — each donation makes a difference. And this week, when you make a donation of $30/month, we’ll send you a limited edition summer tote and water bottle as a thank you. Donate today.
