WORLD WORLDWIDE INTERNATIONAL - ANIMALS - Network for Animals - How Network for Animals helped animals in July.

This is how Network for Animals put your donations into direct action for animals in July.

Dear friends,

July was another month of action for Network for Animals! We rushed emergency aid to war-torn animals in Ukraine and the Middle East, protected Greek street cats from deadly parasites, rescued storm-stricken animals in South Africa and supported a vital sterilization program to combat a cruel cat-killing competition in New Zealand.

None of this life-saving work would be possible without the generosity of compassionate supporters like you. Here's a glimpse of the animals YOU helped last month.

Russia-Ukraine war

A report from the frontline by NFA Executive Director, David Barritt

For animals in Ukraine, each day brings new nightmares. As the Russians advance into civilian areas of Donetsk, more people are fleeing for their lives and abandoning their pets. Having witnessed the horrors of the war zone firsthand, I can attest that the heroes saving animals on the frontline are risking their lives daily.

When the war began, we promised to stay in Ukraine until the war ends. We have upheld that promise and continue to save animal lives in some of the hardest-hit areas, even as many other organizations have moved on. Our partners report that compassion for animal victims of war is waning, and with dwindling donations, we are on the brink of being overwhelmed by the flood of animals in desperate need.

Thanks to your donations, we are continuing our life-saving work in Ukraine. Together, we are providing fuel for rescue operations, rushing emergency food and medical supplies and gradually expanding dog and cat shelters. Thank you for showing the animals of Ukraine that there are still people who care about them.

West Bank, Palestine

Rushing food for hundreds of shelter residents and street animals in the chaos of war

As the war in Palestine grinds on, the suffering of animals becomes increasingly catastrophic. The closure or destruction of businesses such as hotels, restaurants and grocery stores has left street dogs and cats, who relied on leftover food for survival, starving to death.

Our partner, the Animal Environment Association (AEA), is the only registered shelter operating in the West Bank. In addition to caring for 100 dogs and 40 cats at the shelter, our team feeds hundreds of street animals and provides emergency medical care for those with life-threatening injuries. However, donations have dried up, food supplies are depleted, and adoptions have come to a standstill.

We reached out to you with a desperate plea for help, and through your support, we have rushed funds for critically needed food and medical care. Your kindness is saving the lives of animal war victims, giving them a chance to survive until the war is over – thank you.

Kefalonia, Greece

Providing anti-parasite treatment for 500 vulnerable street cats

In Greece, street cats endure harsh lives, scrounging for scraps from tourists and foraging for food in dumpsters just to survive. In winter, when the tourists leave, the situation becomes even more serious. Without food or medical care, many cats get sick, suffer and die. For the past three years, we have been working to help feed, treat and sterilize street cats in the Fiscardo area of northern Kefalonia. We now provide food and emergency medical care for 500 street cats across 15 small mountain villages.

However, the cats of Kefalonia now face a new threat: deadly, flesh-eating parasites that threaten to undo all our good work. Thanks to your generous donations, we have been able to administer crucial anti-parasite treatments, protecting the street cats of Kefalonia for the next three months. Your compassion has saved the lives of hundreds of Greek street cats.

Canterbury, New Zealand

Funding humane population control methods amid a cruel cat-killing competition

A horrific hunting competition in Canterbury, New Zealand, encourages children as young as 14 to hunt, shoot and slaughter homeless cats under the guise of ‘conservation.’ Blood-covered hunters pile cat carcasses in crude cages, and hang them from poles with meathooks forced through their jaws. Shockingly, the government allows the hunt to continue unchecked, as it considers cats an invasive species that threatens native birds.

We reached out to you with our plan to fund humane population control methods before the next hunt. Thanks to your generosity, we are supporting ongoing trap-neuter-vaccinate-release (TNVR) programs in the region together with our partner, Cat Rescue Christchurch. We are also putting pressure on the government to repeal laws targeting cats and ban this barbaric competition. Thank you for stepping up and helping us to save defenseless cats in New Zealand from unimaginable suffering and death, while petitioning the authorities to focus on more humane and effective population control methods.

Cape Town, South Africa

Rushing emergency aid to storm-stricken animals

In July, a violent storm tore through Cape Town, South Africa, leaving countless animals starving, freezing, and susceptible to disease and injury. Many were at severe risk of drowning, being crushed by falling trees and buildings, or being struck by drivers unable to see through the downpour.

Two of our partner shelters, Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Tom Ro Haven Horse Sanctuary, were ravaged by the storm, suffering significant damage to their infrastructure, storage facilities and feeding grounds. Fortunately, the damage has since been repaired, and your donations provided emergency aid in the form of food, blankets and medical care for injured and traumatized rescue animals.

The animals were unprepared for this crisis, but your support was a true lifeline, providing them with the food, care and shelter they desperately needed to weather the storm. We, and the animals, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
