---- Through a workers' survey conducted in Boulogne sur Mer, Lille,
Brittany and elsewhere, it was necessary to account for the existence,
certainly invisible and atomized but real, of a working class remodeled
by Capital according to its restructuring, confronted with the downward
trend in the rate of profit. It is also the anonymity of daily
exploitation that the book aims to exhume. Therefore, the investigation
is not an end but a tool to collectively appropriate a common
experience, the basis of the class struggle. The book is not an end in
itself, the workers' investigation continues. The reflection on the
relations of exploitation, the meaning of work and its dispossession
must nourish the practices of collective struggles.

The exchange allowed a sharing of personal experiences and broader
political considerations, common questions on our defeats but also on
the concrete possibilities of a recomposition of the working class.
Certainly this requires agreeing on the meaning of words, defining
concepts, in short, speaking the same language and, above all, getting
rid of the naturalization of roles and places assigned by the
bourgeoisie. Exploitation and social movements, the violence of the
bourgeoisie and that, in return, of proletarians in struggle, police and
judicial repression, the role of unions were support for discussing the
"state" of the working class here and elsewhere. Personal points of view
that contributed to a broader, necessarily unfinished questioning.

The discussion lasted nearly two hours. A time that was certainly
insufficient to cover the analyses that emanate from the testimonies
collected, as well as the common perspectives that we can draw from them.

In Boulogne-sur-mer, the common room of the Bourse du travail is no more
than a memory, reception areas are rare and increasingly difficult to
access, the encouragement of debate is supplanted by decisions of
"public interest", at best by binary questions. It is therefore
reassuring to see the emergence of spaces where books and speech
combine... Here, in Boulogne, this political space is open to the
bookstore À la ligne... title of the book of the work by Joseph Ponthus,
a testimony of the destructive daily life of a worker who could be any
other...

The investigation is a permanent, multifaceted, evolving act. The book
is a material medium that we can talk about "physically". Let us
therefore warmly hope that the café-bookstore in the center of Boulogne
sur Mer will continue to open for a long time and to invite people to do so.
