WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - (en) France, UCL - Antipatriarchy, TDOR 2024: Not one more victim! (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Murder is a crime that fascinates as much as it arouses incomprehension.

It would be tempting to designate the murderers as inhuman monsters. It
would be tempting to be content with our sadness, to appeal to empathy
to try to rally public opinion behind us. This depoliticized way of
commemorating the victims is very comfortable for the power in place,
who can show their compassion while being assured of not being
designated as responsible ---- However, in the case of transphobia,
murder is only the ultimate form of a whole continuum of violence
against trans people. Violence that is maintained by institutions such
as the State and that is directly linked to the political context in
which it occurs.

The people who rush to pathologize the perpetrators of these acts by
calling them "isolated lunatics" are often the same people who actively
participate in maintaining a climate of hatred, thus creating a breeding
ground for the commission of these crimes.

If the number of victims of transphobia does not decrease from year to
year, it is partly due to the current global offensive led by
reactionary or fascist circles against the rights of trans people. This
number of victims is particularly high in Brazil, Mexico and the United
States. In the latter country, the election of Trump, who made
transphobia one of his campaign arguments, raises fears of the worst.

France is not spared. In 2022, the year in which the Family Planning
Association was violently attacked by right-wing and far-right circles
for its open support for trans parenting, transphobic attacks recorded
in France increased by 20% compared to the previous year. This July,
while the hate propaganda led by French anti-trans activists was in full
swing and was relayed by the media owned by Vincent Bolloré, the
community was shaken by the murders of two trans women, Angelina and
Géraldine, just a few days apart.

In total, 350 murders for transphobic motives have been reported
worldwide in 2023. These figures should be taken with a grain of salt:
these are only those that have been recorded and we can imagine that
they are well below the reality. In addition, it is important to note
that not all trans people are affected in the same way. The victims, for
example, are almost always women. People of color and/or working in the
sex sector are also particularly over-represented.

Finally, among the victims of transphobia, what about all the people
who, sometimes abandoned by their loved ones, in precarious situations,
scorned, harassed, denied access to vital care, end up committing
suicide for lack of a better way to get out of their depression? We no
longer even count these victims, and yet each of them had a name, a
life, a story. These victims are particularly impacted by laws like the
one proposed by LR and validated by the Senate last May, which aims to
prohibit trans minors from accessing hormones and puberty blockers,
while all studies on the subject suggest that suicidal thoughts greatly
decrease with access to this care. These victims, often in precarious
situations, disabled or in an illegal situation, are the first to be
affected by the budget cuts in social assistance announced by the
Barnier government.

Our trans struggles are highly political struggles. They can only be
feminist, anti-fascist, anti-capitalist. They join our actions for
public service, against racism and against ableism. They are done in our
trans counter-powers, but also in our feminist or union organizations.
Let's bring our struggles together. Let's make our voices heard in all
our activist circles and not just our community environments. Because
together, we are stronger and stronger.

Because each victim of transphobia is one victim too many.

Because we remember each one of them and we demand justice.

Because the main culprits always get away with it.

Let's fight to put an end to patriarchy, capitalism and the State!

To find out more about our positioning and our involvement in trans
struggles. A motion that reaffirms UCL's support for trans struggles and
outlines their ideological, demands and strategic contours.
