Last year on November 11, the Regional Coordination Anti Armaments and
Militarism 42 had organized, in Saint-Étienne the first anti-militarist(and singing!) demonstration - for ages - against the official
ceremonies of the great slaughter of 1914-1918. ---- This year, and this
is also a first, it organized open anti-militarist meetings on November
10. ---- As an introduction, a video montage showed the symmetry between
Russian and Western propaganda around the conflict in Ukraine: right,
justice, inhumanity of the enemy, quality of weapons, kindness of the
winner, justness of war objectives...
A first intervention showed the multiple facets of the militarization of
society: laws (1959 ordinances, Army-Education protocols of Hernu and
Savary, law on foreign agents...), economy, ideology.
This first intervention was further explored in the afternoon with a
subject on the SNU and the multiple techniques of indoctrination:
canvassing by means of posters, in middle and high schools, defense
classes, defense industrial reserve... trying to find a way around it in
a difficult context.
This debate was followed by two workshops to propose and work on slogans
and poster projects.
In the second part, a big chunk: the fight against the arms industry at
the most concrete level possible. Difficulty: to act, you need to know
what they are making, with whom, for what, without becoming a
super-specialist in this technological bric-a-brac.
Saint-Étienne therefore presented its detailed mapping of the local
military-university-industrial complex and CRAAM-Lyon did the same with
its work on the military-security "Lyon model" driven by the Lyon
Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
As with the previous ones, the interventions made it possible to outline
avenues for future action.
An anti-militarist general meeting closed the day.
These meetings were a first grassroots militant attempt to repoliticize
- to better combat them - all facets of the military: army, ideology,
regimentation, industries, State, capitalism.
Given the conditions and the current popularity of anti-militarism, this
day was therefore a success. About sixty people met to get information,
discuss, make contacts and see what can be done in the face of the
return of militarism.
The audience was quite varied geographically (mostly local but Savoie,
Isère, Rhône, Gard and the Paris region were present), as well as in
terms of age (historical anti-militarists rubbed shoulders with younger
people who came to these questions from current conflicts) a sign that
this issue is gradually gaining momentum.
