WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - (en) France, UCL AL #355 - Antifascism, Germany: The Far Right on the Rise (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

A series of electoral successes, rising fascist street violence and the
prospect of next year's federal elections: where does the far right
stand in Germany? ---- The summer of 2024 has undoubtedly marked a new
stage in the development of Alternative für Deutschland ("Alternative
for Germany", AfD)[1]and, with it, of the entire German far right. In
the European elections in June, for the first time in the history of the
Federal Republic, a far-right party came in second in a national election.
In the regional elections in Thuringia, it was the first time that such
a party had won a regional election. In the elections in Saxony and
Brandenburg, the AfD narrowly missed out on winning the elections. This
is no shock: for months, the AfD has been consistently coming in second
in national polls. It is the leading force among young people and
workers, especially in the East; the trend for the far-right party is
clearly on the rise throughout Germany[2].

Even though the far-right has long since taken complete control of the
AfD, much more extreme forces are acting in the wake of its success. In
the meantime, the AfD, and in particular its youth association (Junge
Alternative für Deutschland for 14-35 year-olds), collaborates at least
half-heartedly with the identitarians. The latter work as speakers,
trainers and social media consultants or community managers for AfD MPs.

Fascists in ambush
The identitarians hold conferences, write articles and books to
popularize their analyses, strategies and concepts within the AfD, with
increasing success. The AfD also has very close ties to think
tanks[3]and publishing houses of the French-inspired "New Right" that
have a similar orientation. They all form the political environment of
the AfD.

But the electoral success of the AfD also benefits those who are not
popular enough for its leadership: neo-Nazi groups are recruiting more
and more young people again. Fascist attacks are taking place on the
streets, in everyday life, but also during pride marches.

Is the far right on its way to power?
In less than a year, the elections to the German parliament will take
place. If the AfD manages to become the second largest force in the
country, it will have taken a new step. Participation in government,
however, seems rather unlikely, at least for now. It is true that the
Christian-conservative CDU is moving more and more towards the far
right, but the party leadership categorically rules out a coalition with
the AfD. It is more realistic to think that Germany is once again
heading towards a coalition between the conservatives and the social
democrats.

There is no reason to be relieved, because such a coalition would
certainly continue the current government course of isolation, social
dismantling and rearmament, and at the same time push even more people
into the arms of the AfD. As always, we therefore have no choice but to
fight ourselves, from the bottom up, against the extreme right, this
system and for our interests.

[1]The main far-right party, launched at its founding congress on 14
April 2013 (the day after the commemoration of the Gardelegen massacre
perpetrated in 1945 by the SS and the Luftwaffe), the AfD is the only
party under permanent surveillance by the Federal Office for the
Protection of the Constitution (BfV)[translator's note].

[2]Abstention in the Länder elections varies from 30 to 40%[editor's note].
