WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy. Ponte Ghisolfa: Those who give up treatment are increasing: 7.6% of Italians since months (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

The number of people in Italy who are forced to give up treatment is

still increasing. The reasons are economic problems, waiting times that
are too long or difficulty in reaching places of treatment. In 2023, 4.5
million people, 7.6% of the population, gave up on healthcare services
in our country, according to the latest Report from the National Council
for Economy and Labor (CNEL), which highlights how they were 7% in 2022
and 6.3% in 2019, the pre-Covid year, with a surge of 11% during the
pandemic year of 2021. The economic reasons that push people to abandon
services are stable (4.2% in 2023 and 4.3% in 2019), while those related
to waiting lists are increasing, going from 2.8% in 2019, to 3.8% in
2022 and 4.5% in 2023. Furthermore, according to the CNEL, public
spending on healthcare has been rising since 2020, but, despite this, it
is still among the lowest in Europe. (75.6% of the total), while private
spending by citizens continues to grow (+ 5% in the last year alone).

MOST PENALIZED WOMEN AND ADULTS AGED 55-59
The share of citizens who have given up medical visits (excluding dental
visits) or health checks is highest in the 55-59 age group (11.1%), is
lower but still high among the elderly aged 75 and over (9.8%) and
lowest among children up to 13 years old (1.3%). A disadvantage for
women emerges, with 9% against 6.2% of men.

NORTH-SOUTH GAP
The North-South gap that characterizes many indicators in the health
sector is also confirmed. The highest share of renunciations is recorded
in the Center (8.8%), while in the South it is equal to 7.7% and in the
North to 7.1%. The worst figure is in Sardinia with a value of 13.7%,
followed by Lazio (10.5%) and Marche (9.7%). At the opposite end are
Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the PAs of Bolzano and Trento, Emilia Romagna,
Tuscany and Campania with values below 6%.

The data from the latest Report of the National Council of Economy and
Labor Cnel are added to those of Istat, the Istituto Superiore di
Sanità, Fondazione Gimbe and Cittadinanzattiva, Altroconsumo.

The data from the Passi d'Argento surveillance of the ISS released last
October show that in the two-year period 2022-2023, 18% of over-65s
(equal to 2.6 million) declared that in the 12 months prior to the
interview, they had given up at least one medical visit or diagnostic
test that they would have needed. Again, the main reasons for giving up
are long waiting lists (in 55% of the withdrawals), logistical
difficulties in reaching health facilities or inconvenient hours (13%)
and the excessively high costs of services (10%). Here too, an
inequality in access to health services emerges, which varies
significantly depending on socio-economic conditions and the region of
residence. Giving up is more frequent among the most socially
disadvantaged people, due to economic difficulties (39% among those who
said they had a lot of difficulty making ends meet compared to 20% among
those who had none) or low education (24% among those with at most an
elementary school diploma compared to 19% among graduates). Those who
give up most are residents in the regions of Central and Southern Italy
(27% compared to 16% among those in the North) and the rate of giving up
is higher among women (25% compared to 21% of men).

Are 17 cents a day too much?
Just over a euro a week, a coffee at the bar or maybe less. 60 euros a
year for all VITA content, online articles without advertising,
magazines, newsletters, podcasts, infographics and digital books. But
above all to help us tell the social story with ever greater strength
and incisiveness.
