WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY SICILY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, Sicilia Libertaria #455 - WHO IS AFRAID OF THE L.U.P.O.? (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

In these hours the fate of the Lupo gym is being decided, one of the few

"liberated" spaces in the city of Catania. ---- The Municipality has in
fact decided. The former gym located in Piazza Pietro Lupo 23 must be
demolished. It matters little if it has never been declared unfit for
use, and in that case, that nothing has been done to make it safe
(scaffolding, barriers...). The more artistic councilors define it as an
eyesore, if not an eyesore. So the Lupo would be an example of an
illegal construction, not like much of the city coast, which disfigures
the surrounding environment. Not like the judicial citadel under
construction, which will once again deprive us of the maritime panorama,
in defiance of all the "waterfront" projects shown off in recent years.

The former gym must be dismantled to make room for an area used as a
collection point in the event of an earthquake emergency, it matters
little if there are already 2 identified in areas adjacent to Piazza
Pietro Lupo (Piazza Cutelli and Piazza dei Martiri). We wonder then if
the Civil Protection is aware of this and why it has not disclosed the news.

The building in the center of Piazza Pietro Lupo must be razed to the
ground because in its place a multi-storey car park must be built, or
rather an underground car park, or rather a square with an underlying
car park with the same number of parking spaces for vehicles as the one
already present, but with a technological garden. This desire for
greenery seems rather suspicious considering the conditions of the small
garden in Piazza Majorana opposite or, even more, the reluctance to
transform Corso dei Martiri into the first real city park.

The gym in Piazza Lupo must be demolished because some owners of little
tolerant businesses have complained about the noise coming from the
building; we ask ourselves then whether it is not the case to knock down
half of the historic center to avoid it being disturbed by the noise of
the human life that populates it.

Perhaps the administration does not have the courage to clearly state
that it wants to raze the building because for 8 years it has been
occupied and home to a collective cultural and artistic project, of
horizontal and anti-capitalist participation also known as L.U.P.O
(Laboratorio Urbano Popolare Occupato). In this case we would expect
recognition in this sense, in order to publicly ascertain that this
administration intends to demolish a building rather than leave it in
the hands of the self-organization of the citizens.

Reasons for tearing down the Lupo gym can be invented in abundance, as
can be found for tearing down anything, but why in a city as disastrous
and with a thousand problems as Catania has this particular building
been chosen as the objective of the so-called urban regeneration? Who
benefits?

But it seems that the new mayor himself wants to dispel any doubts by
candidly stating that: the previous administration (of which he was a
part) had to "outline 12 projects in 72 hours", otherwise he would have
lost access to the PNRR funds. This semantic marvel can only explain the
depth of the projects presented and the purposes that underlie them. Not
the much vaunted green transformations, urban regenerations, sustainable
mobility or any benefit for the city and its inhabitants, but rather
grabbing funds as easily as possible to distribute them to large
companies, the only ones with the means to respect the very tight
deadlines that allow the disbursement of funding. Following this
reasoning, it is easy to understand what criteria guided the choices of
the projects presented: the ones presented are the simplest to
implement, those already outlined or those that involve some sort of
restructuring. Obviously, the ones who suffer from the plans resulting
from the PNRR are the subjects considered weakest and most marginal, who
have little or no voice to assert their reasons and little possibility
of effectively opposing them.

In these years, thousands of people have passed through L.U.P.O., giving
life to several stable laboratories and frequent cultural events,
exhibitions and concerts, showing without a shadow of a doubt that
Catania needs L.U.P.O.

Now L.U.P.O. needs the support of all of you to continue to ®exist and
carry forward its project.

True decorum is self-managed spaces and communities!

True degradation is institutions based on profit!

No to the "redevelopment" of San Berillo!

No to the eviction and demolition of Lupo!
