The first day of the year is a day to celebrate the struggle of the
people, who in different calendars and geographies rose up against their
oppressors in search of liberation. ---- On January 1, 1804, the Haitian
people declared independence in a revolution against slavery and French
domination. The uprising paved the way for liberation struggles in the
Americas. ---- Also on this day, in 1959, the Cuban Revolution
triumphed, which, through a guerrilla movement, overthrew the
dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. The revolutionary process, despite
its contradictions, stimulated the struggles for liberation in Latin
America and Africa in the following decades.
On the first day of 1994, in southern Mexico, the Zapatista National
Liberation Army (EZLN) began an armed insurrection against the country's
government, on the same day that the North American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA) came into effect. The uprising initiated a broad process of
self-government with indigenous leadership, and articulated an
international resistance network against neoliberalism. Finally, on
January 1, 2014, the regions of Afrin, Jazira and Kobane, in Kurdistan,
declared autonomy from the Syrian government and adopted a provisional
constitution. The process was led by the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party),
with the presence of other political forces, with a self-managed,
multi-ethnic, socially ecological and gender-equal socialist
perspective. Far from being a question of individual transformation, as
capitalism claims, January 1 is a date that inspires us to fight for
true collective transformations, capable of ending exploitation and
oppression and establishing a new society! LONG LIVE THE STRUGGLE OF THE
PEOPLE! FOR SOCIAL REVOLUTION AND LIBERTARIAN SOCIALISM! Libertarian
Socialist Organization
