WORLD WORLDWIDE US USA - New York NY - New York City NYC - THE CITY - Will prosecutors drop the case against Adams?

Dear New Yorkers,

It’s no secret that Mayor Eric Adams has been currying favor with President Donald Trump, meeting him at Mar-a-Lago and attending his inauguration in lieu of scheduled appearances at MLK Day celebrations in the city.

Two weeks ago, it was reported that officials from Trump’s Justice Department were having discussions with federal prosecutors in Manhattan about the possibility of dropping their corruption case against Adams. If prosecutors were to do so, it would save Trump the trouble of pardoning the mayor and allow Adams to claim he’s innocent going into the June primaries.

(In a further sign that Trump is willing to push legal norms, he said he would revoke security clearances for a slew of his political opponents, including NY Attorney General Tish James and Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, both of whom have pursued cases against him.)

But a new development in a case against one of Adams’ aides indicates that career prosecutors at the Southern District of New York are still continuing their case against the mayor — for now.

Mohamed Bahi, a onetime senior aide to Adams who was charged with organizing an illegal straw donor scheme for the mayor, has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy.

If he cooperates with prosecutors, Bahi could be a key witness against Adams.

Read more here about Bahi’s guilty plea — and what it could mean for the future of the corruption case against Adams.

By the way…

Adams, once a registered Republican, has hinted at switching parties for his reelection while aligning himself with President Trump. Here’s the timeline for when he’d have to make the switch going into 2025 election season.

  • On Friday, Gov. Kathy Hochul closed all live bird markets in NYC, as well as in Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties, following the recent detection of bird flu among some poultry in city markets. No human cases of bird flu have been detected in New York state so far. But since 2022, cases have emerged among wild birds, backyard and poultry flocks, including recently on a Long Island commercial farm, which culled 100,000 ducks.

Financial considerations for multigenerational households

3 generations on couch looking at tablet

Research indicates there can be financial benefits to multigenerational living, and when executed intentionally, having multiple family members under the same roof can potentially help improve health outcomes, reduce loneliness for older adults and bolster educational outcomes for children. Here are some financial considerations:

  1. Communication is key to managing conflict and disagreement: Navigating disagreements over spending habits and adapting to changing income levels or unexpected expenses are necessary to maintain financial stability.
  2. Having diverse financial needs: Savings and budgeting plans can be more complicated because of the wide range of ages among family members. Be flexible with your planning to accommodate different saving and budgeting needs and set short- and long-term goals for your savings with all generations in mind.
  3. Expenses should be handled with fairness and equity: Multigenerational households have to ensure fairness by dividing costs such as mortgage or rent, utilities, groceries and household expenses based on each member's financial capacity and usage.
  4. Find balance between cultural values and financial health: Cultural traditions and familial structures can also play a significant role in money management, and it’s important to consider how multigenerational living can impact family wealth.
